Halflax - The settlement of Half-Orcs

Between Orion and the nomadic tribes of Orcs that hunt in the plains north of Calanthi is a buffer zone of broken hills and lightly forested valleys where the Men of the Wild stage their supply camps to provide a force to observe the Orc movements in case their is a build-up for a raid.  As a consequence of the Orc presence, many Half-Orcs are present in these regions too.  A group of these folks splintered off to follow a charismatic Half-Orc Warrior named Vohruk.   Vohruk bartered his services to the Men of the Wild to help them get their bases established and the Men of the Wild brought some dwarves to the hills to excavate a foundation and begin construction on a keep for Vohruk and a village beside.  Vohruk's keep guards the western and northern approaches to a valley used by his villagers to grow food to sustain themselves.  Vohruk is the leader of a great many capable fighting Half-Orcs and has been nicknamed "The Baron Gray" by the Men of the Wild.  Once the foundation and walls were started, the remaining Half-Orcs were able to complete the construction on the Keep.   They also cut a road to approach the keep from the east which leads to the village.  Along the sides of the mountain that guards the village several fighting platforms have been constructed the allow three to five archers to fire down on any invaders.  The expectation is that any fighting force coming around the mountain would give up before reaching the village on the other side.   The Half-Orc village has all the accoutrements you would expect in any village in Calanthi.  The only significant difference are the trophy beasts displayed in the village from the numerous hunts enjoyed by the Half-Orcs.  Unlike the baronies in Calanthi, Vohruk has the authority to have the village run as he wishes in the manner that a baron would have in Orion, but Vohruk does not have the obligations to another lord as they do in Orion, so he need not place his thumb on the backs of his villagers.  They are at liberty to hunt of gather wood as they wish.  The Calendar dictates when they must attend to their fields, but in other times they are free to make use of their time, and the warriors enjoy the hunt.   The Half-Orcs also have a reverence for bones.  When they find bones they bring them to the village and clean them.  Next, the bones are displayed in a manner that fits into the village natural arrangement.  A doorway may be ornamented with bones as hinge pins.  A garden may have bones along the edge.  A Well may have bones used in the counterweight of the water raising levers to help shorten the length of the arm.  It is an alarming sight to those when they first see it, but recalling the culture they left that lived so close to nature, you see there is something spiritual to see the bones are still being put to a use and not hidden away in a garbage pile.  Of course, these bones are not the same because they were found and not harvested from a kill.  But the Half-Orcs have a connection with the spirits of the animals that live in the broken hills, and this is how they show their honor for those that share the land with them.
