Psyphelopod Species in Cairne | World Anvil

Psyphelopod

THese enormous creatures are rare and incredibly hard to pin down, as they are virtually invisible in the waters of Cairne. They are ruthless predators and highly intelligent, able to not only dominate their domains with sheer force of strength, but to control it as well by exerting their psychic influence over the smaller life forms that dwell there.

Basic Information

Anatomy

The Psyphelopod is a huge specimen, normally containing a central mass that is bilaterally symmetric with one or two eyes and a large, beaked mouth at the center point of eight limbs. It has the ability to alter its shape drastically, enabling it to squeeze through small spaces. It uses a siphon for respiration and mobility by expelling a jet of water.

Additional Information

Social Structure

Generally solitary creatures.

Average Intelligence

This is the most intelligent creature known to reside in the oceans. They are able to recognize and remember encounters and even faces and the minds it encounters, often harboring grudges if injured and hunting those responsible in turn. They absorb a great deal of information from the minds they touch, and while a great deal of it is generally discarded and ignored due to it being abstract to the creature, it seldom forgets anything. Each individual is unique in its own way, showing outward signs of personality and preference, only solidifying suspicions that they have evolved past their predecessors and become far closer to a human-like sentience.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Psyphelopods have not only acute eyesight, but are endowed with tremendous psychic ability, allowing them to maintain a near constant awareness of everything going on in their domain by creating a network of awareness that siphons from the senses of all of the lesser life forms that dwell in their sphere of influence.
  • Grapple. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 30ft., one target. Hit 90 (14d12 + 6) bludgeoning damage. The target is grappled (escape DC 20). Until this grapple ends, the target is restrained, and the Psyphelopod can't use its tentacles on another target.
  • Ink Cloud (Recharges after a Short or Long Rest). A 120- foot-radius cloud of ink extends all around the octopus if it is underwater. The area is heavily obscured for 1 minute, although a significant current can disperse the ink. After releasing the ink, the Psyphelopod can use the Dash action as a bonus action.
  • Psychic Wail. The Psyphelopod can exert its mental power over a wide area in a devastating and overwhelming attempt to debilitate all living creatures in a 90' radius by sheer force of will. All living creatures within the effective radius with no psychic means to defend must make a Wisdom save (DC 17) or be stunned and knocked prone for 1d12 rounds.
