Nowhere Settlement in Caerwyn | World Anvil

Nowhere

The city of Nowhere stands stark against the plains and forests that surround it. An unnatural plateau juts high into the sky, a city of bone-white towers piercing the sky on top. It is clear that this city was not built here - the surrounding nature grows about halfway up the rock of the plateau. The rest of the rock is the color of hot blood, red and earthy.

Demographics

The population is mostly Tiefling (79%), with smaller numbers of humans (9%), halflings (5%), elves (3%), dwarves (2%), half-elves (1%) and half-orcs (1%).   Only Tieflings are granted true citizenship in Nowhere and a rigid class system exists there.   The major classes in Nowhere are:

Letex

The letex or elder class are considered to be the wisest members of Nowherean society. Letex are usually nobles who have made their fortunes in their respective enterprises. The top letex make up the Council of Elders, a governing body for the city.

Rot

The rot or noble class are those Tieflings that have made a good deal of money in various enterprises. They live in the upper tiers of the city.

Cria

Cria are the warriors and guards of the city. They are considered the protectors of the wisdom of the letex and the wealth of the Rot from the lower classes. Most cria are bound by a strict sense of duty and come from long lineages of other cria.

Mau

Mau are the working class in the city - people of this class typically work very specific jobs for which they receive training in their early years. Mau are granted property on land owned by the Rot and often pay exorbitant rent in exchange for meager living conditions.

Pli

Pli are those citizens that don't own property and usually operate as day-laborers and serfs to the feudal system run by the rot.

Stae trateidex

Stae trateidex or "strangers" are all non-Tiefling residents of the city. They are allowed to own property through a proxy system, but cannot participate in Nowherean government. Most Nowherean are distrustful of stae trateidex, but are more than happy to take their coin.

History

The history of Nowhere starts 500 years ago when the city mysteriously appeared in a field in the middle of the Ócht Plains near the Dune Sea. With the city, thousands of Tiefling inhabitants also appeared, all apparently having lost all their memories. All they had left were their names, their skills, and their talents. The city garnered a lot of attention from the Empire, as aid was offered and the Colleges investigated the origins of the strange city. New residents began to move to the city and Tieflings made their way into the wider world.

Architecture

The architecture of Nowhere is a strange sight. The core of the city is made from a strange bone-like material, which makes up the majority of towers and buildings in the city. Over the centuries, more infrasturcture has been bolted on (often literally) to this core, made from metal, wood, stone, or whatever was available to build with. This hodgepodge of infrastructure is more prevalant in the lower teirs of the city, with the upper city remaining relatively unadorned.

Natural Resources

The plateau on which the city rests contains a wealth of rare minerals and compounds. Crystals, sulfur salts, firepowder and cold iron all can be found beneath the city. Many of the Rot made their wealth using the Roc to extract these minerals from the earth.
