Eclin's Fall

The heart of the Empire

Downtime in Eclin's Fall

Shops

Eclin's Fall is home to a number of shops, selling all sorts of odds and ends. If you need to buy it or sell it, there is probably someone that can help in city.

Taverns and Pubs

The Belts and Bucklers

Most regulars here are members of the local guilds, usually meeting contacts traveling into the city.

The Golden Fox

The Fox is the foremost tavern for the cities elites and as such has pretty strong security. Nobles frequently take meetings here due to the protection and the pub fare is fairly costly.

The Bone Dagger

The Bone Dagger is probably the least reputable tavern in the city. The site of many a brawl and more than one murder, the Dagger isn't for the faint of heart. It's reputation as a gambling den is well known and it's thought to be operated by the Alley Sharks.

Gully's Grimoire

The Grimoire is the closest tavern to the college and was built by an retired professor years ago. Here you can find students studying, bards singing merrily, and, every now and then, a bit of magic being performed.

Fighting Rings

Gambit's Arena

Home of the finest fights in Eclin's Fall, Gambit's Arena hosts boxing, martial arts, and wrestling, even putting on sword fights some nights. With a reputation for "fair fights, fought fiercly", Gambit's is a popular place to make bets, though the house takes a small piece of the prize winnings from each fight.

Sharkbait's

Sharkbait's is a monster fighting pit hosted by the Alley Sharks. Adventurers are pitted against monsters and can compete solo or with a group. The fights aren't technically legal, but the city guard tends to look the other way (and a off-duty guard or two can often be found betting on the fights). Fights are to the death, but only ever against monsterous creatures.

Places of Work

The Docks

Strong hands can find good work on the docks, moving cargo or docking ships. Those more inclined to mental work can find work as a clerk, recording the comings and goings of ships and cargo. The nimble might even be able to find work working with a shipwright to fix masts and rigging.

The Colleges

The Colleges frequently have use for mages to help perform rituals, test subjects to try out new spells on, or writers to help record lectures and proceedings. Work can also be found in the libraries shelving books or restoring old pages.

Demographics

The city of Eclin's Fall covers an area of approximately 263 acres, with a total population of 34 thousand people. The population is largely human (24%), with smaller numbers of Elves (16%), Halflings (14%), Half-elves (12%), Dwarves (10%), Gnomes (8%), Half-orcs (8%), and Orcs (8%)

Government

The Imperial City-Council, elected from each district of the city - though not at all fairly. The representatives from the lower burroughs are, more often than not, paid off by gangs, business leaders, and even the Colleges - often voting for legislation that goes against the will of the people.   Legislation is proposed in the City-Council meetings, where it is voted on by the delegates. Once voted on, the bill passes to the Hand, where it is enacted officially by the High King.   Each resident pays flat labor and residential taxes while living in the city. Ostensibly this is used to improve the neighborhoods, but often times it is funneled exclusively to the richer sections of the cities, leaving the poorer districts with poorer infrastructure.

Defences

The city is protect from without by a set of walls 40 feet high, iron gates, and massive armaments in the two docks. Within the city, the keeps act as a place for the city guard to train and garrison and each acts as a seperate bastion for the members of the Hand, in case of invasion.

Industry & Trade

Eclin's Fall operates on everflowing trade from the rest of the Empire. Building materials, food and ale, and supplies for the Colleges come in through the docks in the north and south of the city or through the regular trade routes into the Exchange District.

Assets

The city's gold piece limit is 40,000 gp. Anything, whether it be mundane or magical, having a price under that limit is most likely available for purchase. The total amount of available coinage, or the total value of any given item of equipment for sale at any given time, is 31,894,000 gp.

Guilds and Factions

The Colleges

The most important groups in Eclin's Fall are the Colleges, the center of all magic on the Continent.
  • The Giver’s College is the most well-respected and difficult college to get into, focusing on rare Theoretical Magics. The creation of Arcana-tech items came from research done in the Giver's College.
  • The Lady’s College is where many theoretical magicians spend their time. The Lady’s Library, the greatest collection of magical knowledge in Caerwyn, is found here. The Grand Magister is the head of this College.
  • The Lord’s College is home to many practical magicians. Graduates of this college tend to return to their villages and practice magic there. The Maga is the head of this college.
  • The Magician’s College is the most powerful practical magic school. Here Magicians study the Arcane to create world-changing effects, learning War Magics. Battlemages, Spellshots, and Spellswords are also garrisoned and trained at the College. The High Arcanist is the head of this college.
  • The Acolyte’s College is a very secretive school. Membership is only granted to those who have shown an aptitude for less conventional magics. Shadow magic, scrying, and prophesy are all thought to be taught here. The Oracle is the head of this college.

The Law

The Kingsguard
The Kingsguard are a highly trained protection force that operate within the College district, tasked with protecting the High King and the Hand. All members of the Kingsguard are Magicians and highly trained in combat.
The City Guard
The City Guard enforces most city laws and minor offenses. Corruption runs rampant through their ranks and a good bribe often keeps the guard off your back or looking the other way.
The Wyld
The Wyld makes up the rest of law in the city, working to protect the city from larger threats, like magic and monsters. They are a group of Warlock Hexblades that have sworn a pact to the Mór-Ríoghain, a trio of Fey queens. The Mór-Ríoghain have a long standing pact with the High Kings of the Middle Empire, for reasons remembered only by myth.

Guilds

Merchant Guilds
A number of guilds make up the mercantile factions of Eclin's Fall, bringing in goods of all kind. If there is anything you need in the city, the guilds can probably gt it for you.
The Order of Marks
There is a long-standing theory that the Order of Marks operates of out Eclin's Fall. The rumor has never been substantiated, but the rumor still intruiges many visitors to the city - many who've come to see the Order's assistance.
The Hollow Caravan
The Caravan handles many of the trade routes in and around the Middle Empire. Their headquarters can be found in the Exchange District.
Dusk Company
The Dusk Company of mercenaries, sellswords, and spellwrites that often work with the other guilds providing protection, escort services, or even intimidation work. Some say the Duskers even work with some of the crime syndicates around the Empire.

Crime

Thalmian Gang
The Thalmian Gang is the foremost criminal enterprise in Eclin's Fall, operating smuggling rings, gambling dens, and "protection" business in the Eastern Burroughs. The gang boss is an unknown figure, but their lieutenants are well known to innkeepers and criminals across the city.   Ranks   Faoi - Initiates
Céim - Low ranking grunts
Barún - Lieutenants
The Mór - Gang Boss
Grav Lockrel - Protection Barún   Shaye the Smirk - Smuggling Barún   Conall Trarie - Gambling Barún
Alley Sharks
While the Thalmian Gang runs the eastern part of the city, The Alley Sharks claim the west. They recruit local kids to run pickpocket scams on Upper Burroughs residents and intimidate tourists into paying tolls to access public roads. Until recently they also owned the Southern Docks, but lost control in a hostile engagement with the Steel Kings. The Alley Sharks are headed up by Shark Lussor Heavymaker, a dwarven man that likes to roll with high society, though they don't always accept him.   Ranks   Chum - Initiates
Minnows - Low ranking criminals
Sturgeons - Lieutenants
Shark - Boss

The Steel Kings
The Steel Kings are the newest crime family on the streets of Eclin's Fall. No one is quite sure where they came from, but rumor has it that the boss is Donovan the Brander, a low-level gang boss that was left for dead by his old street gang. The structure of the Steel Kings isn't well known and their membership is still very young, having started only a few months ago. The Steel Kings have recently taken control of the Southern Docks, where they run illegal goods in and out of the city. They also have their hands in the trade of illegal Arcana-tech.

History

Settlements have existed in the area of Eclin's Fall for thousands of years. The land is fertile and access to major lakes made this area great for towns and villages. Over time, the population in the area grew, forming together into larger and larger cities. Through military power and political machinations, the cities of this area united into the province of Iariquinigar.   The largest of these cities came to be known as Alandove, eventually ruled by King Eclin the Mighty. For 30 years, Eclin ruled with grace and fairness and was loved by his people. As the years wore on however, Eclin grew more and more concerned with the welfare of his city and his people. Rumors of battle in the nearby provinces had reached the city and it was feared that the Alandove might be drawn into war.   Stories had been told for centuries of strange technology hidden in the ground in this area and King Eclin began to seek the power to protect his city in the ground below it. He instructed his second-in-command, Alstier LeFae to search for the power, carving massive pits into the land, destroying farmland and destablizing the economy of the area. Concerned for the safety of his homeland, Alstier rose up against Eclin and, after a small battle, was victorious over the old King. From this point on, Alstier would wield Kingmaker, a broadsword of incredible power, said to have been granted to Alstier by the Mór-Ríoghain, the spirits that rule over this land in the Fae realm.   Alstier would go on to unite the nearby provinces into the Middle Empire and claiming the title of High King. He established the Imperial Colleges in the middle of Alandove, renaming the city Eclin's Fall and cementing it's place in the world.   Since Alstier's time, the city has grown exponentially - people from all over come to live and work here, supporting the colleges and the Empire.

Tourism

The Colleges attact a large amount of visitors - prospective students, nobles looking to entreat with the Hand, and onlookers to watch the latest ritual or rite being performed. The District of the Five also draws a number of clerics and paladins, looking to study or pray in the largest cathedrals of the Gods.

Architecture

Eclin's Fall is a city of towering stone. The Imperial Colleges stand in the middle, rising above everything else. Many buildings in the city stand 4-5 stories tall, built of the limestone found near this area.

Geography

The city is built on the shore of Lake Banba, one of the Moriglochs - great lakes named after the three Fey Queens, the Mór-Ríoghain. The southern docks are a part of Hakets Finger, a small extenion of Lake Eriu, which reaches far north into the city. Most of the land surrounding the city is plains and there is a small forest that grows just outside the city walls.
