Emissaries

An elite cadre of Dewyn from across the realms, the Emissaries serve as the eyes and ears of the Mesitori Emperor, enacting His will and, if need be, eliminating any threat to His reign.

ORGANISATION

None save the Emperor Himself know truly how many Emissaries there are. It is a rare occurrence that more than one is ever seen in one place at any time and instead they are found across the Empire, in every province and political center. What they see, the Emperor sees and He can channel his will through them to speak. For the most part, they are there to remind the subjugated peoples of the Empire that the Emperor is all seeing and all knowing and all powerful.

MEMBERSHIP

Magic users, or Dewyn as they are collectively known across Caenar, are few in number and across the Empire the Susurration, the Secret Police of the Emperor, are ever on the lookout for potential Dewyn to recruit. Those with minor talent or less than impressive abilities are trained to serve in the Imperial Legions as Rhythels, using their talents to augment the Legions in the endless wars of conquest in the Emperor's name. For those whose talents are more formidable and useful, a rigorous and often fatal training regime will ensue. Few survive this ordeal for it is intended to weed out of the weak and create a formidable warrior. Endless memetic treatments serve to instill within the trainee an unquestioned loyalty to the Emperor. If they survive intact, they have one last trial to overcome. This is the Bargain, a ritual that binds their spirit to the Emperor is the final test. Should they survive that harrowing experience they are declared as worthy to serve Him and become a fully fledged Emissary.

POWERS AND ABILITIES

No two Emissaries are the same for that is the nature of magic. Whilst their powers may be categorized, elemental control, animalism etc., how that power manifests is dependent upon the Dewyn themself. A Dewyn who can manipulate fire will do it differently to another fire wielder. Some will hurl fiery blasts and others will wield flaming swords. Those whose powers are necromantic in nature will commune with the dead in differing ways. One Necromantic Emissary will surround themselves with undead servitors whilst another will craft dead flesh into horrific abominations or gather souls to unleash when needed. Others may use musical instruments whilst some channel their powers into augmenting their physical abilities.

Regardless of their nature, their abilities and their devotion to the Emperor are the stuff of legends. That at any moment the Emperor may be looking through their eyes and speak with their mouths makes them even more terrifying. The people of Caenar see the Emissaries as monsters, the cruel perversion of the once noble and beloved Dewyn who once protected them.

ROLE IN THE EMPIRE

The Emperor has Emissaries across the Empire. They watch over the rulers of subjugated kingdoms, ensuring that the Emperor's will is obeyed. Through the Bargain the Emperor can at any point see through the eyes of his Emissaries and speak through them directly. In some way, the Emperor is aware of everything his Emissaries are.

On rare occasions an Emissary will lead the elite soldiery of the Emperor, the Imperial Knights, to battle. This fierce and deadly cadre of warriors are made even more dangerous by having one of the Emperor's Emissaries leading them.

NOTABLE EMISARRIES

The Wolf is without question one of the most feared of the Emperor's Emissaries. A warrior without equal, the Wolf is the bloody handed unstoppable killer that the Emperor unleashes upon those who have truly displeased him or incurred his wrath. His magical abilities are unknown, though likely augment his martial prowess owing to truly how formidable a warrior the Wolf is. The Wolf has decimated entire noble Houses and butchered whole military regiments. What few accounts there are of his deeds reveal an unstoppable killing machine, enduring grievous wounds that heal within moments and fighting with a prowess none have yet to match. A simple threat to unleash the Wolf is enough to put down a rebellion. The Wolf seldom speaks and when he does it is curt and gruff. The Wolf is the Emperor's Sword and only rarely does he leave the Emperor's side.

Dancer is the daughter of the Emperor, one of several be they legitimate or bastards. Her mother was a singer who caught the Emperor's eye long ago and after a brief affair disappeared, leaving only their daughter. A beautiful red skinned young woman with long hair that changes colour on a whim Dancer's gift is to beguile and seduce. Few are immune to her charms, magically augmented as they are, and her prowess with bladed weapons is terrifying to behold. She has an arrogant, mocking nature but is utterly dedicated to serving her father.

Kreen is an necromancer who commands the souls of the fallen. They whisper secrets to him and he can command them to serve him. He always has an entourage of Shells, armoured bodies that are host to a soul bound in his service, accompanying him. He is devoted to the Emperor like no other.
