BT - Session 1: Backwoods Introductions

"I don't think these wolves are regular wolves."

General Summary

Poe Goodfellow’s journey to Corsegardin Hollow was nearly at an end. Valathar Kent had been laying low on the coast, but was finally heading home. Pamaris Feathersong knew her adopted son was up to something and was looking to stave off trouble. Miko Beantoter was in over his head. Again.   The four individuals came together when Miko, pursued by wolves, tore out of the forest onto the country road. Quick reflexes dispatched the beasts, and the group decided it may be safer to travel together for the remainder of the journey to Corsegardin Hollow.   Further down the the road they came across a pair of shepherds being attacked by wolves. The group quickly came to their aid. During the skirmish Pamaris discovered that the wolves were unusually intelligent. A few wolves were killed, but one was captured. The party made their way to Welton, the small town the shepherds called home. There, they were greeted by the local cleric, Father Merrikson. Merrikson assumed the group had heard of the town’s plea for help with the wolves and had come to their aid. While this was not the case, the party were happy to hear him out.   The cleric led them to the local meeting hall, where community leaders had gathered. They explained that, while the area had often been plagued by wolves, recently the attacks had become more intelligent and coordinated. The situation had become desperate. The town was on the brink–needing to choose between abandoning trade or going bankrupt. The party, spurred on by a generous reward offer, agreed to help.   The first order of business was to interrogate the wolf they had captured. Pamaris used her ability to speak with animals to facilitate negotiations. The wolf, initially mistrustful, was convinced to parley. Through Pamaris, the group learned that the wolves had only recently gained this intelligence, and that their actions were born of a drive to better their living situation. With this information in mind, the party went to see one of the survivors from a posse sent to deal with the wolves. The man, a wounded halfling named Featherstone, explained how he was trampled in the retreat, and that he swore he heard the wolves talking. Next, the group headed to the home of the local sorcerer, who had gone missing around the time that the wolf attacks started. Inside, they found little of note other than a few magic items, as well as a journal that seemed to indicate the sorcerer’s ties to the increasing intelligence of the wolves.
