Vineshade

Originally settled by halfling survivors of the Lost Age, Vineshade is the breadbasket of The Silent Empire.   Vineshade is located in a verdant river valley. Unfortunately, it is under constant threat from [Underground incursions and torquespawn from the Bad Lands.   Despite the hardships, Vineshade is a peaceful oasis in an perilous area. Equal parts Shire and Cadia, in terms of temperament. Among the Imperial Legion, it's considered to be a prestigious post - Military defense is how the Empire flexes its might, and Vineland is no stranger to fights - but during downtime, the soldiers have limited access to the comforts of Vineshade - and nobody does liesure like Halflings. Vinelander cusine and pipeweed is highly rated among Mundans, and it does wonders for morale.
To other Mundans, Vinelanders come across as a bit odd. Less individualistic, with a sense of military discipline, even in the civilians. They have a reputation in the Empire for being quite tough, and near every merchant you'll meet has a story about what happened to the unlucky highwayman who tried to rob a Vinlander.

Infrastructure

Vineshade has a rudimentary lighting grid, and the roads, city center, and defensive fortifications are all lit at night, but individual households tend to get by on gaslamps and candles.

History

Due to their dangerous location, Vineshade welcomed Mundus with open arms. An exchange of foodstuffs for military protection suited the Vinelanders fine - local militias had kept the Vinelanders alive, but with unsustainable losses. Mundus provided the protection of the Imperial Legion, as well as combat training for its citizens.

Architecture

Architecture is distinctly Halfling, particularly in older buildings, while newer building have some of Mundus' steampunk flair. In terms of development, the city has grown organically, but with an eye towards defense - walls and other defensive structures coexist freely with shops and farmland.

Geography

Nestled between two rivers in a mountain valley, the soil is fertile and grows well. Unfortunately, the surroundings are less than hospitable. The mountain ranges to the north house openings to the Underground, and Deep Orc incursions are a reality of life in Vineshade.
To the south, lies the Concatenatoptic Wastes, or more commonly, the Bad Lands, an area inimical to life as we know it (as well as the laws of physics). The Bad Lands are generally inert, but have been known to disgorge the occaisonal unspeakable horror.
