Centware

In 636 AD, Centware is a land of contrasts. To the south, the fertile lands kiss the sea at tall white cliffs, providing bountiful fishing grounds and rich agricultural soil. The people are mostly Christian now, though the old ways still whisper in the shadows of the ancient forests.

The cathedral is a symbol of the faith, standing tall and proud in the heart of Cantwaraburh, a beacon that guides lost souls to the light. The thegns and their retainers till the fields and manage the estates, ensuring the coffers are full and the people fed. Yet, Centware is surrounded by pagan lands, their eyes often turned greedily towards wealth.

The air is filled with the scent of incense from the churches and the distant echo of the blacksmith's hammer, forging weapons for the battles that are never truly over.

The forests are dense and mysterious, holding both danger and beauty within their embrace. The rivers and roads are veins that pulse with life, carrying goods and people to and from the city, the lifeblood of the realm.

And through it all, the people of Centware stand firm, united by their faith and loyalty to their Cyning. They are a hardy folk, accustomed to the harshness of the world, yet they find joy in the simple things: a good harvest, a victory in battle, and the warmth of kinship.

This is Centware, a kingdom of faith, valor, and the eternal struggle for peace.

Eadbald's accession was a significant setback for the growth of the church, since he retained his people's paganism and did not convert to Catholicism. He was ultimately converted and separated from his first wife, who had been his stepmother, at the insistence of the church.
