Tortle

Ancestry Traits

Common Traits
  • Ability score modifiers: -4 Dexterity +4 Constitution
  • Size: Medium
  • Type: Humanoid (Reptilian)
  • Base speed: 20ft
  • Shell Armor: Tortles have immense shells which cover most of their body like a natural suit of armor. Because of this tortles cannot wear armor of any kind but instead receive permanent defenses from their shell. Tortles have a +6 natural armor bonus, a -4 armor check penalty and a maximum dexterity bonus of +3. For the purposes of class features, they are treated as though wearing light armor. Tortles can enchant and enhance their shells as though it were masterwork armor by paying an extra 10% of the normal cost of the enhancements or enchantments. The natural armor provided by this trait doesnt not stack with any provided by sub-ancestries.
  • Full Shell: Turtles can retreat inside their shells to grant themselves greater defenses at the cost of mobility and vision. As an action the tortle retreats inside their shell gaining a +8 bonus to their natural armor but becoming prone and blind. While inside of their shell the tortle is immune to precision damage (critical strikes and sneak attacks) but rolls reflex saving throws at disadvantage, is flat-footed, and cannot make attacks or perform any actions that require their hands or feet (including regular movement). Coming out of the shell is a free action.
  • Flat Shell: Tortles are incredibly hard to knock down, but once they are tortles have a hard time getting back on their feet. Tortles gain a +4 bonus against trip and bull rush checks. However, prone Tortles have to take extra time to get up; Standing up from prone takes two actions instead of one.

Such tortles can stand up from prone by spending the usual one action but suffer penalties to AC and squeezing as though they were one size larger.   Hardy: Tortles with this trait gain a +2 racial bonus to fortitude   Hold Breath: Tortles with this trait can hold their breath for three times as long as normal. This trait does not stack with itself   Iron Shell: Tortles with this trait adjust the bonus and penalties of their natural shell armor to a +8 natural armor bonus, a -6 armor check penalty, and a maximum dexterity bonus of 0. A tortle with this trait can make a slam natural attack with their shell as though it were a spiked heavy shield sized for a creature one size larger than the tortle. For the purposes of feats and class features this is treated as both a natural attack and a shield bash. When a tortle with this trait is missed by an attack with a melee weapon or natural attack there is a 25% chance that the attacker hits the jagged shell taking 1d4 points of damage. When a Tortle fights defensively or uses the total defense action, this chance increases to 50% and when inside their shell the chance increases to 100%. This shell can be enhanced and enchanted as though it were a masterwork shield with shield spikes, but bonus damage only applies to the slam attack and not the passive damage.
Load Bearing: Tortle's with this trait treat their strength score as though it were four higher for the purposes of determing their carrying capacity.   Natural Swimmer:Tortles with this trait gain a +4 racial bonus on swim checks.   Soft Shell: Some Tortles have a much lighter and much less encumbering shell. Tortles with this trait adjust the bonus and penalties of their natural shell armor to a +4 natural armor bonus, a -2 armor check penalty and a maximum dex bonus of +5. Tortles with this trait are treated as wearing no armor for the purposes of class features and increase their base speed by 5ft.
