The cat is part of the doctor thesis she's finishing. She feels like she won't be very welcome at the university afterward and is looking for job opportunities. Her research is based on data from a military project she stumbled upon. It was called Project Paragon.

While the animals in the original project died rather quickly, Salem has already exceeded the expected lifespan of 1-2 years and is currently 6 years old and showing no signs of deterioration.
