Virigem
Virigem is found almost exclusively in the labyrinth of Ruathawaul, except for limited deposits on Ufruktbar. It is a dense triclinic crystal, green in color, and can be clear to milky. It streaks a ceramic plate green-black and if rubbed on glass will leave fine scratches. It warms to the touch easily and requires moderate effort to pulverize making a characteristic groaning or moaning sound and will appear moist despite there being no liquid component. Virigem dust slowly dissipates into the air whether it is left in a dish or placed in a sealed jar.
Powdered virigem has been successfully substituted for nearly every known alchemical substance and can be used as boiling chips to quicken reactions. It has also been used in spellcraft with enhanced success by scholars of evocation, transmutation and necromancy. If used as the powder to draw a teleportation circle, users of that circle will be physically attuned to their destination, resistant to fire if teleporting to the plane for fire for example. Creatures fed virigem powder experience convulsions and loss of motor control within minutes of consumption. This lasts an amount of time from minutes to hours depending on the volume consumed. A creature which has consumed virigem will refuse all forms of food and liquid for days with no ill effects other than sleeping more than normal. Creatures that consume whole virigem undergo the same reactions, though less severe and over a longer period. In no cases does virigem appear in excreta and a creature that consumes virigem does not produce excreta until it resumes consuming food. In some cases when the creature consumed enough virigem to go without food for several days to a week it would go mad near the end of the time, thrashing about, trying to break out of its cages. When they broke free they invariably ran for the nearest opening to the labyrinth and dashed below. When caught they seemed to be normal until brought back to the surface. Other effects where normal biological processes have been observed to slow or cease.
Virigem is readily available through the Adventurers' Guild but commands a high price and most samples are small. Virigem is not harvested directly from the labyrinth. Adventurers say virigem is found after the slaying of creatures native to the labyrinth. The larger and more dangerous the creature, the larger the virigem will be. While adventurers are vague, it can be surmised that virigem is somehow a part of these creatures' bodies.
