Slipgates

It can be surmised that the creators of the Slipgate Coordinators would have also been the architects that developed the Slipgate stations. That is not so, and it is anyone's best guess as to why. While the Coordinators appear rather well designed and have a certain pleasing aesthetic, the Slipgates themselves do not. Compared to the Coordinators, a Slipgate might appear to be some sort of macabre sculpture. It is thought that the Slipgates are from an earlier time than the Coordinators.   Slipgate stations are a means to travel long distances without actually moving. Technomancers, when they can be convinced to expound about Slipgates describe them in terms of folding and puckering almost sounding like a tailor laying out cloth for a garment rather than dimensional translocation as used by teleportation. Slipgates tug at spacial reality, causing it to fold or dimple like pushing a finger into a curtain. Except the dimple extends through the para-physical space until it reaches the destination where the two spaces overlap ever so slightly, and for a fraction of an instant, just long enough for a traveler to "slip" across the boundary. Mathematicians have created proofs that show how the process works, but none of the models use less than five dimensions.    Most Slipgates are built horizontally, having a platform to stand on, and a parallel ceiling, both constructed of a grate made of a mottled, metallic substance. A few have been found to have vertical beams which allow for continuous movement, say for a caravan or a marching army. Many times the energy that powered them has degraded and no longer works. If a Coordinator is nearby, the Slipgate will show signs of being altered, presumably to use the same power source as the Coordinator.  Some powerful mages have succeeded in activating a Slipgate by channeling raw magical power into them but without a Coordinator, their destination may be unknown and most likely extremely hazardous.
