Sir Amery Porthouse

Sir Amery Porthouse

Amery Porthouse is an ashari soldier, general, and duelist who serves in the Order of Oris. He rose to its highest rank of lord sentinel, meaning he both leads the organisation and is directly responsible for the personal protection of the king and his family. Amery was lord sentinel to King Aldred the Good and was in office at the time of his death.

Appearance and Character

Amery is in his fities when first introduced although still bears a somewhat youthful appearance. Unusually short for a fighting man, he was renowned for agility and balance in duelling, using a rapier over a longsword. He has fading copper hair and a light brown complexion, his family descending from merchants in Shen. He also has a distinct eyepatch covering his left eye.   He is presented as an honourable man who takes his oath to the Order of Oris incredibly seriously. He truly wants what is best for the realm and served Aldred admirably for some years. A master of military strategy and personal combat, he is limited in both knowledge and interest of matters outside of these subjects, and struggles to understand or care. Nonetheless, he is overall a kind and loving man who supports honour and goodness.

Personal history

Sir Amery's paternal grandparents hailed from Shen, an impoverished country in southern Tembra. Upon migrating to Eremere, they adopted the surname 'Porthouse' after they spent some time living on the docks at East Port.   As a brown man from overseas, and a poor one at that, Amery suffered much in his childhood in the form of prejudice and discrimination. As such, he had few friends and had to look out for himself. He learnt to fight from a local solider, who taught him how to turn his disadvantageous height and small body mass into a winning attribute.   Amery soon enlisted in the Order of Oris, understanding that military exploits were the only chance an uneducated commoner such as himself could achieve success. Although still prejudiced, the order was kinder to Amery than the outside world, and he flourished.
