Ambrose Brawnby

Ambrose Brawnby (a.k.a. The Wilted Rose)

Ambrose Brawnby is a disgraced noble from Eremere and was formerly the high earl of Springmore. He is the father of the now deceased John Brawnby and grandfather of the current high earl Walter Brawnby. Following a revolt in the 986, he was deposed and forced into exile. His current whereabouts are unknown.

Appearance and Character

Ambrose was known to be a well-built man who, in his youth, could handle a blade. His mind, however, was never quite as sharp, and he failed to inspire his men when leading troops in battle. He was strong-willed and driven while ambitious to a fault. His ego famously outweighed his ability. He was also known by his vassals as vain and arrogant, believing he did not need their help in running his realm, preferring to grant positions to friends and family.

Personal history

Wars of the Wilted Rose

During the later years of his father's rule and the early years of his own, Ambrose grew frustrated with the petty yet frequent raids on his lands by the Krasterlanders of eastern Tembra. In 957 he petitioned King Aldred the Good to send an invasion force to Krasterland to eliminate the threat once and for all. Aldred saw no good from the war, sending Ambrose back to Rose Court empty-handed. By 959 he had amassed his own force, and in a series of blundered campaigns and failed attacks that saw no real good come from a great deal of loss, Ambrose squandered his finances and manpower. He had some assistance from Richard 'the Formidable' Whitemount of Dregonvell, and in return, he would give Richard the Rush, though this claim is disputed. By 971, he had to leave the job unfinished, returning to Springmore with a new moniker: the Wilted Rose.

Richard's War for the Rush

In 972 Lord Richard Whitemount invaded Springmore, claiming Ambrose promised him the area known as the Rush in return for Richard's help in Krasterland. Ambrose denied this and Richard's War for the Rush ensued. Were it not for Richard's death and his heir Edward's withdrawal, Dregonvell would have more than likely proved victorious.

Deposition

Ambrose also had many issues domestically. Most of his finances and manpower were squandered on the wars, and his alienation of his vassals in favour of friends and family had led to significant dissatisfaction with his rule. In 974 Almost all of Springmore issued an ultimatum in which he either agreed to step down and enter exile or be executed. He fled to Tembra, leaving his son John in control of Springmore.
