The Tears

The Tears began about 100,000 before the Modern Era. Rips in space irreverent to time began to appear sporadically in the wildest and most uninhabited parts of the world. Of the considered sentient beings on the planet, the unicorns were the first to pay heed, as it was usually areas near their kind, and they were the most attuned to care, especially when their own kind began to arrive through them. Aside from the unicorns, those who took notice first were the Dragons, the pegasi, Dwarven Kind, and the Elves. If others bothered, they either do not document or didn't consider it worth recording or didn't exist yet in the World.

Manifestation

It's as if the fabric of reality was torn open. Sometimes neat, sometimes messy. They can only be viewed from one direction clearly, facing the tear. They have no effect outside the cone of view with the tear as the focal point. The distance is limited to the field of vision and angle of the cone focus. Some cultures have built gate-like structures around the tears, some in veneration, some to utilize, some to attempt to seal them off. Tears, so far to the Modern Era knowledge across kinds, cannot be closed.

Localization

Air its self doesn't seem to pass through, nor water unless carried. In this regard, they do not act as drains between worlds. It takes the conscious and deliberate will to pass through, including and extending to the will to bring things along. Thus a strong wind will not blow through, nor a breeze, but a merchant caravan could pass with ease. If a tear opens in the depths of a body of water, but only on one side, the water its self will not pass through, though the dwellers can easily go to and fro. In the event that the bodies of water match mass for mass on either side of the tear, and the tear opens on an equal level plane of water, the water will pass freely between if it is of the same type, as is this in the case of air. If the quality of the water or air differs on either side, and equal exchange will not occur. In this respect only will wind or breeze come through the tear. It will come through on both sides, as is the same with waves at a surface level of water.
Earth is neutral to this. A rock can fall from a mountain on one side, and complete whatever inertial journey on the other.
Fire will pass through with or without regard for these natural phenomena of laws, as it requires fuel to burn, it will jump from fuel source to fuel source irrelevant of the tear. Tears are unharmed and unaffected by fire.
Tears will only affect what is immediately in contact with it. Anything in the vicinity will continue as though the tear is not there until it makes direct physical contact with the tear its self. That which passes through is another matter. Tears can be blocked up by mortar and stone, and only affect the inside space of a stone seal. If a tree mass grows around a tear, the tear can only affect what is in its uninhibited immediate vicinity exposed to it, as such a tree can grow into a tear acting as a stopper or cork if thick enough, or through wearing it like a ring even.
