Prince Valerian and his twin brother Balerion were born at Deep Den as the royal entourage made their way to Casterly Rock, for a great tourney held to celebrate the defeat of the Ironborn threat and the union of houses Lannister and Blackfyre through the marriage of his uncle, Prince Daemon Blackfyre of Summerhall, and the Bold Lion's sister, Lady Joanna Lannister.

Before assuming his position as Prince of Dragonstone, Valerian acted as father's squire along with his brother in law and friend Barquis Peake.
