Kingdom of Maerlo
The merfolk Kingdom of Maerlo is the most prominent underwater polity in the the World of Biethal. Maerlo was created through the Order of Maerleian Union by the Council of the Four Tribes. The Kingdom of Maerlo is the successor state to the Jucheno Tribal Confederacy. The Confederacy was established between the 4 major Merfolk tribes of the area as a way to protect themselves from the aggression of the Sahuagin from the outer depths. Eventually the Confederation was deemed so successful that the chiefs of all the tribes agreed to be united in a single nation.
The Kingdom was founded on the principle that the Merfolk were stronger together. The 4 tribes that created the Kingdom were the Serosin, the Drespin, the Pherin, and the Grafkin. In order that no tribe could grow to dominate the others the leaders of the confederacy wrote up the Maerlo Charter which limited the power of the King, and transformed the Tribal Assembly into the Council of Tribes that acted as the Legislature, and advisory board to the King, and his Minister of State.
The kingdom has lived in relative harmony since its creation, and become more united than ever. The primary trade partner of the Kingdom other than other small merfolk, aquatic elves, and triton communities is the Thalassocracy of Chel. They primarily export fine made Merfolk crafts, as well as fish. The primarily import items such as wood, and other material that is rare underwater.
