Zanara Orenic Vogel
Born in 1188, Zanara Orenic came from a respected family of modest magical talent and impeccable political connections. Sharp-witted and ambitious from a young age, she quickly rose in prominence among the noble circles of the Dominion. Her keen mind and tireless dedication to her family’s interests made her an ideal candidate for marriage into
House Vogel—a union driven by politics, not love.
The marriage between
Galmyr Vogel and Zanara was known to be loveless, but undeniably effective. Though they had only one child,
Wilhelm Vogel, much of the duchy’s current success can be attributed to Zanara’s intelligence, stubbornness, and administrative talents. While Galmyr “played at war” and ultimately met his end by the sword, Zanara was the steady hand guiding the duchy at home.
The Ruthless Hand Behind the Throne
Zanara was a woman of relentless practicality. To those around her, she appeared calm, composed, and utterly focused on the prosperity of the duchy. However, beneath her polished exterior, she was a master manipulator, willing to sacrifice anything—and anyone—for the survival and growth of her family’s power.
Despite her reputation as a capable administrator, whispers surrounded her for much of her life. Cwenhild, the Venerated Shield of Heironeous, was perhaps her fiercest critic.
Cwenheld Thralen never trusted her, suspecting that Zanara was far more dangerous than anyone realized.
"Zanara never wore her power openly, but it was there—hiding behind her sharp words and calculating mind. She was a more powerful wizard than anyone gave her credit for, and I will never shake the suspicion that she had Avelyne killed." —Cwenhild, the Venerated Shield of Heironeous
Cwenhild believed that Zanara orchestrated the death of
Avelyne Marsten, Galmyr’s first love and the mother of his firstborn son, @Beringer. Though Galmyr sent Avelyne and Beringer into hiding, tragedy struck when Avelyne was found dead at the villa where they had sought refuge. Beringer survived only because @Cwenhild arrived in time to save the child. Galmyr, devastated by Avelyne’s death, swore Cwenhild to secrecy, never revealing Beringer’s fate even to himself.
A Strained Relationship with Her Son
Re-marrying was never an option for Zanara after Galmyr’s death in 1210. Instead, she devoted herself entirely to the duchy—often to the detriment of her relationship with her son. Wilhelm was raised largely by servants and aides who indulged his every whim, lacking the authority to discipline him. Only Zanara could rein him in, but her attention rarely strayed from her duties.
The distance between mother and son grew over the years, forming a cold and transactional relationship. Wilhelm grew up resentful, and Zanara often saw in him not a son, but a tool to secure the legacy of
House Vogel.
The Fire that Changed Everything
In 1226, tragedy struck once again. Zanara perished in the same mysterious fire that claimed Wilhelm’s first bride. Whether it was an accident or an act of sabotage has never been confirmed. Some say the blaze was the result of magical experimentation gone awry, while others whisper that it was divine punishment for past sins.
"Zanara played with fire her entire life, and in the end, it consumed her." —An anonymous courtier of House Vogel
