Lisette DeSalle

Baroness Lisette Desalle

Lady of Darkstone, Wife of Baron Remy Desalle
"She was born into bright banners and clean honor, and married into shadows. You can see it in her smile—half real, half resigned. There's no villain in her story, just a slow bleed of joy." — Sir Sorek Redmarch

Appearance

Lisette Desalle (née Berrenin) is the picture of grace dimmed by quiet sorrow. Slender and poised, she moves like someone who learned courtly dances long before she ever saw a battlefield. Her dark auburn hair is often worn in intricate braids, though more recently she’s favored simple knots. Her eyes, once bright with mischief in her youth, now seem to weigh every conversation before she speaks.   She dresses with refinement, favoring pale silks and soft greys—tones that neither draw attention nor invite scorn. A silver brooch in the shape of a hollow tree is her only frequent adornment, a gift from her late mother.

Background

Lisette was born into House Berrenin, a minor noble house known for its healers and lorekeepers. The daughter of a noted herbalist, Lisette took to the craft early, developing a deep love for nature’s curatives. Her approach to alchemy and herbal medicine focuses on easily grown, practical ingredients—no exotic nonsense, just what could be coaxed from garden beds and forest edges. She shares this knowledge freely, and is beloved by the people of Darkstone for it.   Her marriage to Baron Remy Desalle was arranged to secure political ties. On parchment, it was a sound alliance. In life, it became a cold one. The Baron is a moody, aloof man—commanding in court, distant at home. Lisette has borne it with quiet dignity.   She is the mother of two sons, Alric and Cedric. Her greatest ambition is to raise them better than the world she was handed.
"A wedding forged in politics may hold, but it rarely sings." — Dame Venom, after visiting Darkstone

Current Role

As Baroness of Darkstone, Lisette manages the daily welfare of the people. While Remy governs matters of law and land, Lisette tends to the spirit. She offers poultices to the ill, herbs to the weary, and wisdom to those who will listen. Her cottage garden—tucked behind the manor—has become a sanctuary for those in need.   Dame Venom once came to Darkstone seeking hospitality a decade ago. Though ignored and snubbed by Remy, she was quietly welcomed by Lisette. The two shared an evening over herbwine and bitter laughter. Since then, Venom has spoken of the Baroness with quiet respect.
"You ever seen a falcon in a cage too small to spread its wings? That’s Lisette. The tragedy is she doesn’t even rattle the bars anymore." — Sir Aldos Verran

Personality

Lisette is composed, intelligent, and deeply empathetic. She has a sharp memory for names, stories, and small kindnesses done years ago. Her sense of humor is dry and subtle, often catching the inattentive off guard. While her demeanor is warm, she rarely speaks her mind in public.   She is not naive. She sees the game of court for what it is—and chooses not to play it unless necessary. She values decency, duty, and kindness, but beneath that is a steel born of disappointment. Those who mistake her grace for weakness have often found themselves gently—but firmly—undone.

Relationships

  • Baron Remy Desalle: Her husband. Their relationship is strained, polite, and marked by absence more than presence. She does her duty, and nothing more.
  • Alric Desalle: Her eldest son, groomed for leadership. Lisette supports his growth and hopes he will be a just lord.
  • Cedric Desalle: The younger son, more impulsive and fiery. She nurtures his better instincts and tempers his pride.
  • House Berrenin: Her birth family, now distant. Their legacy of herbal lore and healing lives on in Lisette's craft.
  • Sir Sorek Redmarch: An old family friend. She trusts him more than most, though they rarely speak directly of her troubles.
  • Dame Venom: Wary respect turned quiet admiration. Venom sees the fire behind Lisette's quiet, and does not mistake her softness for weakness.

Rumors & Whispers

  • She once wrote to the queen's confessor, asking about annulments. The letter was intercepted.
  • Some say she keeps a blade beneath her dressing table, not for defense, but choice.
  • It’s whispered her marriage dowry included lands that Remy has secretly sold off to pay debts.
  • One of her maids is said to be a spy for House Allaric. Lisette pretends not to know.
