Garren Thralen
**Baron Ervelyn DeSalle** – A noble of middling talent but great ambition, known for his desire to make a name for himself through daring and often reckless decisions.
Baron DeSalle insisted on leading a grand expedition into the **Redwood Fen**, a perilous marshland said to be rich in ancient treasures but crawling with dangers, including the remnants of an old, cursed war. He had no true military necessity to traverse the Fen but sought to impress the king by securing a forgotten relic that would cement his place at court. Fearing pursuit by rival lords or highwaymen, he commanded a rearguard to ensure his caravan's safety.
The expedition went awry when the baron underestimated the hazards of the Fen. A quiet mist turned deadly as it obscured the approach of a feral, unaligned band of mercenaries driven mad by the swamp's curse. The mercenaries attacked the rear of the caravan, where Sir Garren Thralen and his few loyal men held the line to protect the retreating nobles and wagons.
Despite their bravery, the rearguard’s sacrifice was in vain. No pursuit ever came; the danger was fabricated in the baron’s own paranoia. Sir Garren fought to the last, knowing full well that his death and those of his men served only to cover Baron DeSalle's fear and hubris. Meanwhile, the baron and his retinue stumbled out of the Fen with only minor casualties, the relic lost, and the mission deemed a failure.
Dame Braga, Sir Garren's sister and a promising knight in her own right, resigned her knighthood and reverted her lands to the baron in a public gesture of outrage and despair. She denounced DeSalle's arrogance and cowardice before the king’s court, calling his leadership a betrayal of every knight’s sacred vow. Her resignation and condemnation forever tarnished the baron’s reputation, though it could not return her brother or the others who died unnecessarily.
Sir Garren’s death became a tale told with hushed tones in knightly circles, a symbol of loyalty exploited and courage wasted. His name, though not forgotten, serves as a cautionary tale about the price of blind duty to an unworthy lord. Dame Braga, meanwhile, wandered the realms as a penitent warrior, bearing her brother's sigil on her armor as a mark of her grief and a reminder of the cost of misplaced fealty.
