Svartalfar in Beyond Ragnarok | World Anvil

Svartalfar

The Svartalfar are a long eared race that are similar in look to the Alfar, but have either a light yellow or grey skin tone in places; usually at the hairline, corners of the eyes, base of the neck, creases of the fingers - and other such places, but there is a wide variation across the realm, from just these highlights, to full grey/yellow skin tone. Some even have yellow or black eyes as well. Their main mark is a crease line horizonally across the cheeks. They usually wear leather with metal accoutrements if smithing and crafting, and/or heavy weave cloth of fine quality when not. They can be quite colourful in their dress, and take pride in their appearance.

They are an ancient race and longer-lived than Humans (approximately 100-150 years)

They are ruled by a Svart known as 'The Forge' - you may think this would get confusing as there are thousands of physical forges for smithing and crafting within these cities - but no, everyone knows who they mean when they mean it, something to do with the way it is said. He lives within their main city Bholvor. The leaders of individual cities are known as 'The Anvil' with their second is known as 'The Hammer.'

Svartalfar, commonly referred to as Svart, though are also known as Dwaves; are dedicated smiths and crafters. Their cities are marvels of technological achievement, and their weapons and armour are second to none; and very sought after by all races across the higher realms. For matters of food, they aren't particularly creative, and nourishing, plain fare is the norm; this is grown and tended by their most technological marvel; the automata - semi intelligent machines that can perform tasks as directed. They tend the fields and the livestock, with the lower class Svart (those proven to not be as apt at crafting or smithing) then making and distributing the food.

Contrary to popular belief amongst humans; there ARE female Svart.

Svartalfar can be found on Svartalfheim only. They do not live on the other worlds; seeing no reason to do so.

Below is an overview of what life is like for Savartalfar within their cities.

SVARTALFHEIM

Svartalfar cities are like internal warrens. When you think of cities, generally the idea is open air streets with houses, public buildings and parks. This is not a Svart city; the entire cities are covered, making them look like mountains in their own right. Inside can be found the usual additions of housing, public buildings, and their 'parks' are open areas where technological artworks are displayed. The Svarts lives are based upon their ability with smithing and crafting. The better you are, the more revered you are. Some use their talents for the crafting of weapons and armour; which are coveted by those on all the Higher realms. Their materials, techniques and artistry in this area makes 'having a Svart crafted weapon' a point of jealously for all those who do not own such an item. Other Svart use their crafting talents for more artistic works, or building works, or for the building of the @auto
