Death & Resurrection in Beyond Ragnarok | World Anvil

Death & Resurrection

Death in beyond Ragnarok, is not immediately permanent. Your soul has been bolstered by the Goddess Freya; the most learned of the ways of magic, to mimic the old practices of creating Einherjar. This process can be done two times; however if you return to Midgard and die for a third time, your soul will go to its normal resting place, detailed below, when you die.

This affectively gives your character three lives.

What to do When you Die

1. Stay where you died!

Unless you need to move for safety reasons

Stay where you died! If you do need to move, do so to the nearest safe location. A ref, dressed as a Valkyrie, will be round to collect you; and clip your card to indicate you have lost a life.

If you have died in an unobvious and obscure location away from ref's, please go directly to God with your hand in the air for this purpose.

2. Pay the Valkyrie

When you die, your soul will go back to Asgard to be reconstituted, or to its final resting place.

It has been agreed by Freya, that her Valkyries will take any runes and shards with your soul; however if you want any items to also be recovered with your soul, they need to be paid for.

For each item in your possession, you will need to pay ONE rune card (also must be in your possession) of the appropriate power, or the equivalent conversion of. Any unpaid for items must be handed over to the Valkyrie.

Items for be paid for includes;
  • Any Runic Crafted Items
  • Any Ritualed Item

  • This is not an exhaustive list; please check with your Valkyrie as to what needs to be paid for.

Your old body and any item unpaid for upon it, will be dissolved by the Valkyrie after you soul is taken, leaving nothing left.

    Payment Example:

If you have a Fatal hammer; this is a master weapon. This requires any obsidian rune to recover. If you do not have an obsidian rune, you can use the appropriate downward conversion of; 3 haematite runes, 9 quartz runes, or any combination of. I.e. 2 haematite and 3 quartz, to produce the required power of an obsidian.

    3. Report to Monster

Unless countermanded by a ref on the scene; to represent the time it has taken to reconstitute youself in Asgard, and then return to midgard - please report to monster for a short monster stint, before returning IC. The ref who collects you will give you instructions, if anything different needs to happen.

    4. Return Through the Portal

On site there will be the portal area that is where the bifrost connects to Midgard. You need to make your way here with you hand in the air, and return through it to return IC. You may have your weapons on you, but these will be mundane, having been 'picked up' in Asgard.

To regain lost possessions you will need to return to the site of your death, unless told they have already been recovered; bare in mind, the items may have been recovered by other players who may or may not give them back.

    Bleed Times Differences

As described in the Character Creation section, dependent on which of your three lives you are on, will determine the standard bleed time you have.

  • On your first life; you will have a bleed time of 3 minutes.
  • On your second life; this is reduced to 2 minutes,
  • On your last life this; is reduced to 1 minute

  • Via in game skills, these times can be altered.

    Where Souls Go

Before Ragnarok, the magics of the world pulled the souls of mortals upon Midgard to one of two places; that of Asgard via a Valkyrie, or to Nifelheim. The Jotunborn upon midgard went straight to Nifelheim, due to the Jotun blood in their veins. Alfar believe they went to the world tree Yggdrassil in order to nourish the realms; and Svartalfar believe they became the embodiment of fire to stoke their magical forge. This process of preserving souls in various forms kept the world in balance, and prepared for Ragnarok.

When the Bifrost was cut off, the realms were no longer balanced. With no need for more Valkyrie & Einherjar, the souls of Humans and Jotunborn refugees were said to now be sent to strengthen Yggdrassil like the Alfar. Alfar and Svartalfar continue as before, their roles in death continuing unhindered. But each realm, and each person, will have their own beliefs, as no mortal really knows the truth.
