Marcus Bendforth
Marcus is the leader of the Protective Force of Elmont. In fact, he is about the only thing Elmont has to a full-time fighter. Regarded as Sarge, it is his duty to help organize and train those Elmont citizens that have an ability and the equipment needed to protect Elmont when the times come. This is a rare occasion, though. The Protective Force is used more often for "search and rescue" type operations - finding hunters that haven't checked in for a while, Haulers that have broken down, farmers in the outer rings that have fallen ill, etc.
Marcus is a very large man, being both tall are extremely well built. When undergoing his duties, he typically wears a makeshift breastplate, roughly formed from a thick piece of steel. While he is competent with firearms, his preferred weapon is a long, heavy-bladed axe. While his appearance and deep, grade voice would make him seem like an ill-tempered man, Marcus is actually quite kind and even mannered. He truly cares about Elmont and its inhabitants.
Marcus succumbed to the The Deep Lake Stone's power back at the The House in the Woods. As the group slowly made their way through monster-infested woods, he slowly lost his battle to keep his self. He sprung up from the cart that the group pulled down the road between a couple farms and sprinted out into the woods, carving a wide path through the underbrush. Buckskin Sandy gave chase, as well as Jericho Caurd, though the latter soon gave up as his wounds and general exhaustion prevented him from keeping pace. Marcus wasn't seen again until the Connely Farm as he trailed behind the Hauler Truck coming back from Elmont and the other farms. He ambushed the truck as the riders dismounted, the power of the stone washing over them. Some died as they fled from Marcus, others as they rushed to him to steal the stone for themselves. In the end, nine others were killed by Marcus, the fighting man using the stone as a hand club. He was stopped by Jericho in his usual manner, quickly and precisely applied violence. He was left bleeding in the rain and mud while Jericho and the Mainer took the stone off to Deep Lake for disposal. Volk tried to help Marcus using a technique he read in an old Earth That Was novel - touching a hot poker to the wound - but whether this helped or hurt Marcus is up for debate. Once the stone was returned to the Lake, the group has taken the stable but feverish Marcus back to Elmont where they hope the doctor there can treat him.
