Woe Drinker Item in Belthuran | World Anvil

Woe Drinker

By many names is this item known, as it takes many forms all to appeal to the target of the malevoant essence within the item. Woe Drinker is the most common name for it, often appearing as a sword. It creeps into the mind of the wielder finding what brings them the most sorrow, then subtly manipulates them into reopening old wounds. From there it will start to implant the idea that to be free of that sorrow, remorse, or woe that the holder must start killing, or causing pain. As this happens Woe Drinker dampens the part of the brain that experiences sadness making the person think they are healing themselves in the process when all they are really is causing more pain and suffering to feed Woe Drinker.

History

What tales there are of Woe Drinker assume that it is the creation of a devil or demon, the reason for it to damn people to the profane realms without their even knowing it. When exactly it was created no one knows, but what is known from the few who were able to learn what the item is before it was able to consume them is that the essence within the item is a mix of profane both devil and demon. Why someone would merge such essences together is unknown but it feeds off the suffering it influences but can sustain itself on a victim's personal trauma.   Many attempts have been made to destroy or banish the item but it always seems to find itself back in the material world, scholars who know about this item or entity believe it has something tethering it to a place in the world that it can always return to regardless of how they might try to contain it. It is speculated that if this binding could be broken the essence could be destroyed, or if one could learn to work an Entropic Oubliette that such a thing could contain it forever.
