Aether Ray Species in Belthuran | World Anvil

Aether Ray

When first I gazed upon one of these elusive creatures I had been certain I was in a fever dream or had found some remannt of the Far Fracture. Roughly the size of a man though twice as wide it glided through the air like the rays of the sea. From below its body dangled a dozen long tendrils and dozens more smaller ones, all probing the air. Muted colors of the earth helped to hide it in the moments it grew skittish. Slapping down against the ground, had I not seen where it landed I'd have lost it among the moss-covered rocks. The creature headed towards an area I had just finished surveying. One filled with stagnant arcane energy I had classified as hazardous to life. I would note it seemed to have a purpose as if drawn there. As it crossed the area's threshold I saw a startling change. The earthen hues were replaced with a prismatic glittering display. Those long tendrils, glowing themselves, stuck themselves into the ground while the smaller ones waved about. On observing them with my surveying gear I could see the arcane energy being absorbed into the tendrils both from the ground and air. Anything that had been oversaturated became the target of this creature until it had its fill. It was at this point I had tried to move to a new position to better view the creature. When I knocked some scree loose and it saw me. As a result, the colorful display began to pulse in patterns I hadn't seen before on its body. I would say they looked alike to glyphs mages use and then it was simply gone, as if it had never been there to begin with. When I resurveyed the area I found that all the excess magic was no longer present. I thus theorize that this creature, which I shall dub Aether Ray. Feeds on arcane energy, and is apparently quite fearful of other creatures, or perhaps myself or others like me. I have never heard of anything like it but it seems they serve the purpose of cleaning pockets of stagnant arcane energy, would that we could employ them around our cities.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Roughly the size of a human man length-wise and at least half again that wide. The body has an arrow-like shape narrow at the front and spread wider to the back. It has a tail like an aquatic ray's stinger but no one knows if it has poison or is simply a weapon. The body is covered in a hide that can mimic colors and patterns easily not unlike squid and while no one has ever touched one it is assumed they have a rubbery hide based on observations.

Biological Traits

A body capable of changing color allows for near perfect camofluage in seemingly any enviroment. The documented example shows that they can go from muted earthen tones to bright vibrant colors of the rainbow, maybe even more beyond the scope of mortal eyes.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

They are able to sense areas of concentrated magic, seemingly drawn more to those that have grown stagnant.
