Esoterica

Esoterica are the simulacrum souls created by humans to perform Manipulation without having an aptitude for true magic. They are not literally a fake soul, but rather act as a conduit for magic energy just like the soul does in true magic. They are imperative to perform magic as an Esoteric.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

Esoterica works by having small bits of lledstone trigger a resonance within an otherwise mundane object. This resonance allows gives the object the ability to absorb magical energy and expel as if it were fully made of lledstone. When crafted by a single individual, the object can then be attuned with their own soul, which allows them to channel magic for manipulation as if they were a true mage.

Manufacturing process

The lledstone is cut into one of several magical shapes and then placed inside of the object at certain points. These points differ depending on the object, although staffs will usually have it at the top, while books may have it on the front cover. The lledstone in this position causes a magical resonance that allows the whole object to channel arcane energy as if it were entirely made of lledstone.

History

The first esoterica was created hundreds of years ago by humans of The Old Kingdom, with the hope of mimicking the true magic seen especially among the elves and the quoteyo. The first esoterica was made out of solid lledstone that was attuned to a human's soul through how it was carved. As time went on, creating esoterica out of solid lledstone was expensive and impractical, and the mages of Galdorborg found techniques that can allow an object to take on the conductive powers of lledstone by cutting the lledstone in specific ways and then placing them in specific parts of the object. From there, esoterica creation became a standard craft among the mages of Galdorborg, seen as just as academically useful as any other.

Significance

Beyond its magical use, esoterica are also a major symbol of human innovation and magical prowess, and esoterics, especially from Galdorborg, will usually prominently display their esoterica to remind others of their power.

Raw materials & Components

An esoterica is made of two main components: the object itself and the lledstone. The object can be any mundane object, although mages tend to favor things like walking staffs or books, things with practical uses. The lledstone used to imbue the object with magic is generally cut in a way that makes it potent enough that only a small amount is needed, generally as large as a pebble after being cut.
