Session 2: Gasoline

General Summary

On the street - first, the man with Leaping Lloyd hot footed away away from the others. Philip York and his two cronies jumped into a car (Oldsmobile) and tried to race away - with the others pursuing in Lloyd’s Mercedes. Wilfredo, driving, sideswiped a garbage can - but the Olds plowed straight into a parked Chevy, wrecking both. The thugs piled out, the characters chased, and ran a couple of them down, Lloyd doing a flying leap to get one of them. Back at the cars, though, Gretchen’s careless attempt to prevent a fire touched off the gasoline; then Alexandria’s attempt to get the car started and drive off, but failed even more miserably. The gas blew - the Olds and Chevy were completely consumed - Lloyd’s car was badly damaged, though still operational. The otherc came back with York, and piled in and drove away before anything came of this debacle. (The people called the fire department, who came in time to keep the city from burnign to the ground. The press came as well and would have the story in print within a couple hours.) They drove to the rail yards and grilled Philip York. Who is Sidney Pebbles? York said that’s what they were trying to find out. He ran away when pressed, going out the window. He mentions the Stingray, Vlad, Mickey, the Haunted House. They let him go and they go back to the hotel. At the hotel, Lloyd charms the night clerk again, and are able to get intoSidney’s room, and to get rooms fo their own (#35 & 37, I think). They take his accounting book. They clean up, then go out again. They drop off the car at a garage, and go to the library. They get some info - the book was checked out by “Tom Hardy” - they leave some info about themselves, if this Hardy should be looking for the book. They dive into the stacks, looking for information about things. Lloyd takes things too far, annoying the librarian; the others have more luck. They get the basic story about Steinmetz Associates and its troubles. They read about Patrick Steinmetz, his daughters, Laura Vroom and Edith, they learn about how people see the companies troubles. They read about the sabotage and how the Hales caught spies from O’Brien Enterprises. They also learn about the local papers - their attitudes, their writers: Jameson Jacquot and Oswald Mortimer at the Times; Anton Leiber and Lionel Totten at the Gazette. They then turned to the librarian, but things did not go so well. They tried to snow her with a story - she turned hostiole. So Lloyd tried to turn on the Hollywood charm - but she was not a fan of the cinematograph. She said that movies were a tool of Satan. They were obliged to retreat.
