The Pit of Tar

Purpose / Function

The main purpose of the Pit of Tar is to allow the Conjoining of the Mad Gods to have a not only safe but also neutral resting ground. As each member has their own lair on one of the planes and rules that lair accordingly there was a need for a neutral lair that each member could easily reach all the while not belonging to anyone but the Lord of Madness, a position that is not biased to anyone in particular.   Besides this however, the Pit also serves as a shelter for those lost within Shadespace and a possible final stronghold against the forces of Chaos if the Mad Gods were to fail in their efforts. As such, its black silhouette lights up against the grey and purple background that usually colors Shadespace, guiding the lost and vulnerable to its safe harbors like a lighthouse guiding ships through the worst of storms.

Alterations

The Pit has gone through some extensive alterations across the ages. Originally, it was merely a deep lake of black tar, at the bottom of which lay Que'Tar whenever he would rest between his rampages, however this was quickly altered as the position of Lord of Madness changed from person to person. Over the ages, the Pit slowly changed from a mere bottomless lake to a massive tower of tar, a change that Que'Tar did not revert when he regained his position and that has changed the Pit from a mere place of rest for the Lord of Madness, where lost mortals could rest if they found it, to a beacon and meeting place for the entire Conjoining, where mortals are actively led to by the Pit's mere presence.   In recent years, however, the Pit underwent a different kind of alteration; one inflicted by the hands of mortals instead of those of deities. After the Collision those who fled into Shadespace have gradually begun to settle around the Pit, establishing small villages and communities guarded by the black shine of the Pit from the despair and insanity that hath overtaken the minds of other peoples in Shadespace. To this purpose, the mortals that reside in these communities have build dozens of docks ranging from just a few planks on it's shore, used by criminal gangs to dispose of bodies, to huge black-stone quays, used for various ceremonies and for recreation.

History

On the the third day, when the Mad Gods were still considered nothing but monsters and the Sane Gods were though of as nothing but threats to the divine order, one Mad God spoke up for his brothers; Baronie, the god of the Golinae and the more charismatic of the three, came forth to the multi-spherical powers that would decide their fate and declared that their purpose was essential for the multiversal order and they deserved a new lair, as their old had been stolen by the Sane Gods to create the world of Bator, in which they could rest and reconvene between rampages, which, he argued due to their experience, only they could do effectively. This plea was convincing enough to most of the multi-spherical gods, particularly Thoth, Reorx, and Oghma, so that they would grant them their new lair.

This lair became what is now known as The Pit of Tar, but was first simply known as the Shadowlake, and was placed within Shadespace of the Abandoned Realm due to its cold and none-chaotic nature. At first, it was used as a swimming-pool of sorts for the three Mad Gods where they would frolic and relax, but as the Conjoining kept growing and became more and more hostile the lake grew to become less a place of relaxation and more one of pure rest reserved for the Lord of Madness alone to sleep.

Over time, as the Conjoining grew and new Lords took over the lake it grew into the Pit of Tar many know and seek refuge in. The way that the Mad Gods treated the Pit changed just as much as the Pit itself did and not just with how much they relaxed in it, particularly after the Coup de Mád. As previously stated, the Pit was first simply a swimming pool where the three original Mad Gods would play as the children they were and, in many ways, still are but it eventually became more of a bed for their Lord. This change was greatly influenced by the fact that many members had Lairs of their own and that the rank of Lord of Madness became more of a power position and of superiority that was to be fought over. The Pit became a throne instead of a resort, a deific palace instead of a getaway, and a goal rather than a step towards a greater good.
A rather important event in the history of the Pit of Tar was when the first group of Shadow-vagrants settled the area around it. These refugees had fled the Abandoned Realm into Shadespace after the Collision to seek refuge with its inhabitants but were either greeted with a cold shoulder, persecution, monsters, or nothing at all and had to scavenge to survive, becoming known as Shadow-vagrants to the peoples of Shadespace that they encountered.

After about six decades of roaming through the plane of shadow, one of these Shadow-vagrant tribes, one of predominantly Golinae in fact, managed to locate the Pit of Tar, a location that was well known in their faith and they had been specifically searching for. This tribe immediately began building their camps at the shores of the Pit as well as searching for any other Shadow-vagrants to join their new community. As the settlement grew this drew the attention of the Conjoining, something that was very much expected and even intentional on the Shadow-vagrant's part so they could call for their aid.
First, Baronie came to shore from the waters of the Pit, second Karles arose from the depths of the Pit, and third Que'Tar fell from the skies above the Pit. All three spoke to the vagrants that immediately fell within their domains first; Baronie spoke to the Golinae of the vagrants to give them advice and simply rest his mind of the stress of his people's hypothetical struggles, Karles to the sick and wounded to soften their pain and educate them on medicine, and Que'Tar to the warriors and leaders of the vagrants to tell them of how to survive and thrive in Shadespace. Then, all three of the Gods spoke to all of the Shadow-vagrants and declared them to be welcome to live near the Pit on 3 conditions; 1. Never abandon the Batorian deities, for they have not yet abandoned them. 2. Never forget the old world for it still exists. And 3. Never abandon each other, for it is all they will have in Shadespace.

Ever since then, the Shadow-vagrants have grown as a community, still devoted to the Conjoining of the Mad Gods and the entire Batorian pantheon without question, and still visited by the various gods of the Conjoining regularly for education and to offer what they can as evidence of the previously mentioned devotion, with the quays they have constructed being particularly important for this as they are oft used for these meetings.
