Thaddius Gripthwistle
Thaddius is a brilliant, if eccentric engineer. The work he does along with his many apprentices has kept the vehicles of the caravan going far longer than anyone could have ever reasonably expected. His expertise led to the conversion of the caravan to a static encampment in short order, nearly alarming some of the citizens of Bastion at the town that magically appeared beneath their walls. While a great deal of his time is spent ensuring the encampment doesn’t fall apart, his true passion is inventing new contraptions to be tried by willing (or somewhat naive) volunteers. The contraptions are just as likely to do something wonderfully unexpected as they are to spontaneously explode.
While Thaddius is passionate about his work, he does have an exceptionally strong moral compass and is very careful about whom he provides his work to. Thaddius is a short gnome, wrinkled with age and completely bald. The only hair on his head grows from his pointed ears. He’s normally found peering over his exceptionally thick half moon spectacles that rest on a large nose and wearing a leather apron. His apron has dozens of pockets containing various tools, including three additional pairs of spectacles which he swaps out seemingly at whim, although sometimes he will combine them when something has caught his attention.
Thaddius is most often found in a small lean to shelter containing a few rough materials with a red, glossy metal toolbox in the middle of the floor. Opening the box reveals a small ladder leading down. Entering the ladder leads down to a small room, fifteen feet square with walls lined with high quality tools, small boxes of supplies and a broad workbench and Thaddius at work. The room is illuminated by ambient light, but no obvious light source and the light seems to increase or decrease in intensity at the snap of Thaddius’ fingers. Within the room is every tool Thaddius needs to complete his inventions but he still needs the raw materials bringing to him to create them.
