Session 47: Greshalthar
General Summary
28th Conditori
The black dragon said his name was Greshalthar, and spoke Common to the Freelancers. He said he had been living there for hundreds of years, living off what the Underdark provided. He looked "grey around the scales" - when he was close, there was an acrid smell that burned your nostrils, like he's corroding or causing things to corrode. Robyn tried to sneak to another part of the ruins but he could see her even when she was being pretty stealthy. He gave us a choice: lose our heads, or go kill the Night Mother for him as revenge for them stealing his brother's corpse. His brother had got sick and died, not sure what killed him but he was already dead when the drow came. Greshalthar hid when they came as there were many of them - he is not proud of it. He said his brother's body had been defiled by the Night Mother of House Karlaith. The Night Mother is in possession of "strong magics" that let them traverse through the waters of the underdark. The place he had taken as his lair used to be full of books (that have long since perished) but he had never seen or read of any magics like hers. The waters of the Underdark run deep and are all connected. We offered to lead a party of drow to him to take his own revenge, or take him with us (as he can change into a human form, one with black hair and eyes) but he declined both. He asked for something to be left in exchange as proof we'll come back - Robyn gave him a ring that she said was not especially valuable as an item but it was extremely personal. We left the underground temple; Rel, Saman and Liv put the Umberhulk corpse down into the temple for the dragon to eat. When leaving it is foggier than when we arrived, and eventually as we head north, the mist and fog gets so dense that we can't see more than 10ft in front of us. Eventually we reach a river of fetid water - not good for drinking at all - but hard to tell how wide it is in the current fog. Set camp on the bank to stay the night.29th Conditori
Overnight there's an odd "wooshing" noise that flits around from spot to spot, sometimes by her ear or some distance away - hard to pinpoint or identify. Whatever it was, didn't disturb us, so advised not to disturb it/them. Saman, Penny and Rel also heard it on their respective watches - Rel spoke to it, but only got her words repeated back to her. In the morning, they stopped talking. We headed upstream to find the source of the river - as we walk, the fog lifts more until we can see the other side of the bank; the river also narrows until it is about 30ft across. The ground starts rising upwards and gets rockier; Robyn checked the river, so whatever the corruption is we've not passed it. On the torch was a weird parasite like creature with a mouth either end that hops along the wood. Robyn threw the torch down and it hopped off the wood into the sand and started burrowing; Saman sacred flamed it to death. With the fog lifting, the rise can be seen to come to a crest which links to more of the tundra; the river itself comes down into a basin in the valley. It tapers significantly until we get to a cave, very narrow, no way in without getting into the water. Saman used light on a rock and dropped it in - the water is a greenish tinge in colour. He also tested the water to see if the bugs would do harm to him - they do corrosive damage which hurt, and he squished them. Saman suggested using light on an arrow to shoot into the cave to see if we can see what is in there better - from where it lands, it seems that the tunnel keeps going quite a way before widening, about a 15 minute walk before it gets to a 10 foot point, all while in the water. Saman also suggested using an exploding arrow to see if that would do any damage to the creatures in the water - not sure if will be enough, but Robyn suggested getting rocks to seal the entrance or slow the flow of the contaminated water. Before we try that, we look around further and head to the top of the rise to see if there is another entrance. Liv found an arrow in the rocks that Penny said was made in Purgatory. Saman and Robyn head to the top of the rise, and Robyn seens the rocks moving around the others down the hillside - shouts at them to run, and then Dan leaves us on a cliffhanger.Previous: Session 46: Much Fighting
