Dorza

Twilight Goddess, Keeper of the Grave, Veiled Lady

Goddess of twilight and the grave. Her clergy preside over funerals and watch over graveyards. She is a dual goddess with Xelena, goddess of birth and the dawn.   When they were born, both goddesses were beautiful, but Xelena paled in comparison to her sister. Dorza was so beautiful, that all who saw her was transfixed by her beauty and could neither think, nor move. So Leetha wrapped her daughter in a shawl so that none could see her or be entrapped by her unintentionally. Dorza wears a black gown and a long veil to hide her beauty. It is said, she only pulls the veil back to reveal her face to the dying, and only to those who she deems worthy. At the moment of their death, they see her face and are transfixed by the beauty of it as she takes them to the land of the dead.   The holy symbol of Dorza is a sickle. Her clergy wear greys and blacks. Many wear a veil, though not all do.   The undead are anathema to Dorza. What has passed beyond the veil of death should not return to the world of the living. Her clerics and paladins wage holy war upon the undead, particularly intelligent undead, wherever they find them.   The most powerful Dorzan sect within Edresh is the Rhugaerian Order, known colloquially as the Graveborn. At the culmination of their training, Rhugaerian aspirants are buried alive at dawn. Those who are able to master their fear of death spend all day in their coffin and are exhumed at dusk, reborn as devoted servants of the Keeper of the Grave. Second are the Shrouded Sisters, an order of women who dress in all black - hooded, veiled and gloved - so that not an inch of skin shows. A much smaller order, they never remove their veil, not even in the presence of the other sisters.

Holidays

Day of Reaping On the 28th of Harvest, last day of the year, people celebrate the end of the year and family who have passed beyond the veil. At sundown, the clerics of Dorza ritually harvest the old Sun which has died. They build bonfires to illuminate the long night. In the morning, Xelena gives birth to a new Sun and the days gradually grow longer again.
