Pauelo Capiari

Pauelo Capiari, once Brother of the Church of the Spreading Eves, is a Parensatian "voice of the voiceless" (essentially a social worker) from Lorellen, who worked in the slums of Renelestre to help those many children who lived on the streets and had no where else to turn. He set up a small orphanage and care center for the most desperate, for which he provided medical care as well as food and housing. He also became a place for some to turn who were not as bad off, but needed to get out of a scrape here or there. He is notable for the influence he had on a number of young pickpockets, including a childhood Key, and is a large part of the reason that group identified themselves as virtues and "do-gooders," though there actions were perhaps more pragmatic than ethical.  In 549, Pauelo Capiari was excommunicated from the church by Cardinal Villiers for social and sexual sins for which he would not take responsibility. The particulars of which, it seems, are that Brother Capiari had a secret tryst with a young noble's daughter, leading to a child being born out of wedlock. When confronted with his misdeeds, it was his refusal to give up his ministry in order to care for the girl and the child which led to Villiers' decision to excommunicate, partly to root out hypocrisy in the church, but also in the hopes that leaving Capiari's ministry unsanctioned would lead him to make the "right decision." As it was, Capiari was steadfast that his ministry in the slums to the helpless was more important than being there for a child that in his mind had already had plenty of resources to have a good life. And so he continued his work unsanctioned and with scant resources. He now resides in the "Shed End" in The Bottoms, where he runs a perilously-funded charity.
