"The main house on the plantation, where my sister lived, was only three times the size of the other hundred workers and employees' houses, painted white with red roofs and frames, contrasting with the green around it. It was an L-shaped one-story house, full of windows and with roofs as low as the height of the walls, surrounded by five porches and small gardens.
