Serpent Jungle
On the southern island of Caladrem lies a vast, forbidding jungle of vines and muck. Traversing the jungle is almost impossible, as the ground is soft and sinks under footfall and the trees filter much of the sunlight before it reaches the ground. Still, there is life in this jungle, though not what most would consider proper or decent. The Serpent Jungle - living up to its name - is home to the snake people of the yuan-ti and their kingdom Yuan.
The main temple and city of the yuan-ti sit near the northern edge of the forest, where it meets the mountains. Surrounding this temple is a sprawling city that contains around 11,000 inhabitants, though not all are serpentine. Defying long-held conceptions and traditions, the yuan-ti have recently begun welcoming traders and merchants from the outside world into their secretive city and society. These travlers must follow a very carefully plotted path through the jungle to reach the city safely, dodging danger and
misstep along the way.
Besides their main city around the temple, the yuan-ti also have a number of jungle villages and outposts that function somewhat autonomously and only report to the main city in cases of invasion or unrecognized parties in the swamp. These villages are small, with no more than 400 inhabitants in any one location, due to the soft and perilous nature of the jungle ground. They have managed to carve away swaths and clearings into which they have built their homes, but the oppressive jungle is never too far away from these wayward settlers.
