Lake Sildar

Lake Sildar sits just west of the Backbone Spires, surrounded by three nations constantly vying for its boons. Each nation has one town on the lake's coast, and competition for fishing spots is fierce and often violent. This trend has forced the fishermen of all three towns to hire mercenary protectors for their fleets, which provides a steady source of employment for mercenaries and adventurers from across the world.
The fish of Lake Sildar are plentiful and varied, from small perch to larger bass and trout - and even dolphins on occasion. Whales have been seen from time to time, though they tend to be smaller in size than their oceanic cousins - even then, the fishing boats are often too small to even attempt to catch one. The depths of the lake are said to hold ancient beings and frightful monsters who prey upon lone fishing vessels.
Apart from the three nations and their towns on the coasts of Lake Sildar, there is also an island in the center that houses the Torloch Observatory, an ancient and respected center of astronomical and arcane research. The waters immediately surrounding Torloch are neutral ground where no violence between fishermen is permitted, and the academy contracts with each of the three towns for ferrying duties as well as goods provisioning - though they tend to lean a little more heavily on the elven kingdom of Crann Riocht for supplies, as the academy is technically owned by that kingdom.
