Gapwatch Fortress
This is one of the border forts constructed and maintained by The Dale. True to its name, this fort sits in the gap between Lake Sildar and the mountain range of Toldrun's Shoulders - the only piece of land connecting The Dale to its northwestern neighbor Oestbernia. There are about 2,500 soldiers stationed here, though there have not been any intense border conflicts between the two nations for several centuries. Though this seems overkill for many outsiders, The Dale's intense isolationism means that Gapwatch is responsible for monitoring and admitting all outside merchant caravans into the kingdom. While outsiders are typically not allowed, various travelers and merchants can be admitted with a specific royal charter.
This fort is constructed as a traditional castle, surrounded by a moat and two drawbridges. There is a central keep within the walls where most soldiers' quarters are located, then the smaller surrounding area is used primarily for training areas, food storage, animal pens, and one inn that caters to the occasional travelers. All buildings in the fort are made of thick, heavy stone and have slate roofs. It is an imposing, impressive fort for those who view it from the surrounding countryside, though its interior is warm and welcoming.
