The First Spear

This spear is of great importance to a Helian. Whether it is a harbinger of oncoming glory or certain damnation depends on the personal outlook of the individual.
— Parvaiz Sungleam, Soldier

Overview

A Helian considered to have come of age when they are given their first spear. The spear is given as a sign that one is ready to contribute to Helian society as an adult. In recent times, this means being available for conscription into the army. Service in the army is highly regarded as it means that one will soon contribute to the growing glory of the Radiant City of Sol either through victory or through death.   It is not the only coming of age ceremony in the Kingdom of Helia. However, it has become one of the most important due to the ongoing conquests.

The Ceremony

The ceremony is rather straightforward, but with enough trappings fitting for the boisterous Helians. First is the announcement of a military official to the person that they will be given a spear. Next is a giving ceremony where the qualified person recites a oath of allegiance before taking the spear. After the spear is taken they are given their first orders along with a complete set of equipment. A meal then follows to celebrate the spear giving. This also acts as a final comfortable meal for the person before they go to the front lines. Any family of the person have an opportunity to give small gifts to help with the journey.

The Helian Spear

The spear is a Helian soldier's main weapon. The length of the spear gives them greater reach over the soldiers of most other nations. Some spears at set ablaze at their tips to inspire fear into the enemy. This blaze is often set using magic by a Helian Mage.

I wonder what the Helian coming of age tradition will be if they ever choose peace over war. - Archivist Savitri

This is really cool for a civilization based on war, and the archivist has a good question. I really like it, great article :)

You should check out the The 5 Shudake, if you want of course.
