Captain Zephyr

Few pirates can claim to have plundered as much as he.
— Marda Seafoot, Fisherman

Overview

Zephyr made his name plundering merchant vessels out in the The Verdant Archipelago. He was driven to piracy through ill fortune, and a lust for revenge against one of the most powerful guilds on the continent.

Fishing Life

Zephyr began life fishing out of Free City of Centrum as part of the Blue Waters Fishery. It was a small guild, and it didn't take him too long to begin running it. The waters can be a dangerous place, and the former leader died while trying to hunt a killer whale that somehow entered the Occulus Sea. Aside from losing a mentor, Zephyr enjoyed a fast-tracked career.

Enter The Mabara Guild

In what seemed like a turn of good fortune, the Blue Water Fishery bought by the growing Mabara Guild. Against promises made, they did keep Zephyr nor pay him the promised amount of coin. Mabara had quietly written fine print that had changed the meaning of the contract, and they had used the opportunity to acquire assets. Consequently, Zephyr decided to make a life for himself hunting Mabara merchant vessels. He quickly gained a reputation.

Pirate Life

Zephyr's experience with the Mabara Guild had influenced his outlook against all major guilds. He quickly began targeting merchant ships not belonging to Mabara. He soon became a menace to all ships in the Occulus Sea for his utter brutality against captured crews. He would often cut off fingers, tongues, eyeballs, or any other appendage he deemed suitable. He always left a note on the merchant ships he did not sink, condemning the guilds for all manner of crimes.   It is not clear where Zephyr weighed anchor. Some say he was somewhere on the northern shores of the sea, though there are several fjords and caves to hide in most of which are dangerous.   Zephyr's reputation eventually became a liability to his survival. The Free City of Centrum, the Queendom of Lunaria, the Principality of Avistar, and the Kingdom of Helia had begun to task ships with capturing or killing him and with sinking his ship, the Gran Orca. This eventually forced Zephyr away from the Occulus Sea, and so he set sail for the Verdant Archipelago to retire at first.

Zephyr's Great Plunder

Eventually, ships began traveling more and more westward as sailing technology and ambitions had grown once again. Many had also began to hear about the tropical paradise of the archipelago, and ships had begun to set up small settlements in the region. Settlements that had to be resupplied. Thus, Zephyr took to the seas once again. His confidence had grown with each new plunder, and soon he set his sights on his greatest and most daring scheme yet: robbing the Mabara Guild's vault.   To see his plan through, Zephyr captured a merchant ship- putting its crew to death- and set sail for Centrum under disguise. Once at Centrum, he successfully robbed the vault and stole what many believe to be over 50,000 coins made of gold. How Zephyr and his crew achieved this is unclear, and we only know it was him from the note he shot through the window of the Mabara Guildhall on an arrow. By the time the guildhall had opened for morning business Zephyr was gone.   Mabara would spend the next ten years aggressively recouping its losses that night. Before they set to that, they would try everything to find their coins- and to deal with Zephyr.   However Zephyr had managed it, he made it back to the Verdant Archipelago and took great pains to hide his plunder. Shortly after that, the Gran Orca was hunted and sunk by a pair of newly constructed Centrum Galleons. Zephyr died with the Gran Orca, and with him the secret of where he had hidden his plunder. Somewhere in the Verdant Archipelago, Zephyr's Great Plunder is waiting to be found.

Note(s) from the Archivists:

As if I needed another reason to dislike and distrust the Mabara Guild. Can't say I don't understand why Zephyr became what he became. - Archivist Enna
