Patryck Askalion

Patryck Evars Askalion

Patryck is a scholar, big nerd, and quiet dissenter in Dana Athi. He is the son of Askal Danydion and the older brother of Reggi Askaliel. His research explores the history of religious movements and Paragon-related activity in Dana Athi. Like his sister, he detests inequality and the entrenched power structures in Avernay. However, their approaches differ. While Reggi would happily blow it all up (figuratively or literally), Patryck considers himself pragmatic and believes in deliberate, incremental change. His patience and forbearance extend to other parts of his personality, as well -- his sense of humor, skepticism, and mischief are actually quite similar to his sister's, but he is (usually) able to restrain himself for the sake of his career and social standing, and he is only candid with people he trusts.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Patryck is tall and lanky, though he's starting to get a little soft in his midsection. He is somewhat athletic; he practices archery with his father on weekends and does calisthenics each morning.

Facial Features

He looks a good deal like his sister -- big dark eyes, slow to smile around strangers.

Identifying Characteristics

He has a crescent moon tattoo on the nape of his neck denoting his elven heritage. He also has a scar on his palm from trying to grab a dagger away from his younger sister; she was only five and had gotten into their father's personal things.

Physical quirks

He pushes his hair back from his forehead compulsively when he's flustered or deep in thought.

Special abilities

Patryck has lately been studying magic with a colleague and can perform a few wizard cantrips.

Apparel & Accessories

Patryck favors simple but elegant scholarly robes. His only ornament is a silk scarf that belonged to his mother.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Patryck is the eldest child and only son of the late historian Ashild Evarsdattr and Askal Danydion, a paladin in Aithinnia's honor guard. His childhood was quiet and somewhat isolated; as a half-elf, he was kept apart from the rest of Dana Athi society, so he had his mother, sister, and occasional tutors as his only companions. Still, he was happy. He spent most of his time reading and studying history, discussing what he'd learned over meals with his mother and sharing interesting tidbits with his father. When he wasn't reading, he would play with his wild younger sister; even though she was younger, she was bolder and more willing to take risks, play pranks, sneak out when their mother was occupied with her own work.   After his mother died when he was 14, Patryck became more focused on his own studies. His goal was to continue her work. He grew closer with his sister, Reggi -- at least until she ran away from home when he was 22. Since then, he has only seen her a handful of times, though she writes him from the road. They are much less close now, though he still thinks of her -- when he wants to be braver and bolder, when he daydreams about a life of less responsibility, when he thinks of a joke but knows no one around him would understand why it's funny.   After Reggi left, he started working more closely with his father, shifting the focus of his studies to include the history of the cult of Aithinnia. He and his father are friendly now, and at times, Patryck thinks they might even be friends, in their own way. They discuss history, current events, and the rise and fall of prominent figures in Dana Athi. They never talk about Ashild or Reggi, and Patryck doesn't bring up the work he does to continue his mother's research, either.   At 30, Patryck's life is still much as it's always been. He largely spends his days in solitary contemplation, reading, and writing. He sees few people outside his circle, which includes his father, a few of his father's close associates at the temple, and other scholars at the library of Dana Athi. He corresponds with scholars and writers across Avernay and occasionally travels for symposiums and research. If anyone asked, he would say he's happy, but he increasingly feels at loose ends. He has never been in love, or traveled purely for pleasure, or done something that surprised the people around him.   After the Darkness was unleashed outside Dana Athi, he picked up his mother's old research on the paragons and asked his sister to investigate.

Sexuality

He likes them tall, dark, and handsome -- in theory. Patryck's experience with men has mainly been confined to crushes on street vendors and one short fling at an academic symposium.

Education

Patryck studied at the university in Dana Athi and has visited several other institutions and libraries in Avernay.

Accomplishments & Achievements

  • Wrote an extremely long book that very few people have read.
  • Once convinced his younger sister to eat fire-breather candy right before going to religious services.

Intellectual Characteristics

Pretty bright, and not bad at reading people, either.

Morality & Philosophy

It is essential that we remember the stories of the past; only by standing on the shoulders of giants can we hope to achieve progress, justice, and greatness.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

He wants to finish the work his mother started, honor Aithinnia (and his father) with research into religious history, and prove to the elves of Dana Athi that half-elves can be just as wise and capable as full elves, even if their lifespans are brief.

Savvies & Ineptitudes

Great at thinking, terrible at flirting. Can always tell what his sister is thinking but is still surprised by what she chooses to do.

Likes & Dislikes

Likes:
  • The smell of old books
  • The feeling of sea air on his face -- he traveled on a ship once for a research trip and dreams of the sea often
  • Street performers, especially ones who use weapons, like his sister
  • His grandparents' farm
  • Sitting by a fire at night
  • Cats
  • A good whiskey or rum
  Dislikes:
  • Pretentious people and snobbery, especially among scholars
  • The unequal treatment of half-elves and other "lower" types
  • Winter
  • Papercuts
  • Sweets
  • Limericks

Virtues & Personality perks

Extremely patient. Thinks before he speaks. Brilliant scholar, always willing to challenge orthodoxy in his field.

Vices & Personality flaws

Tends to keep his feelings hidden. Not bold or brave in personal matters.
