Soul Equipper

Legend

There is an old legend about a man whose true identity has been lost to history. Some accounts claim he was human, while others insist he was a Celestial. Most stories remember him only by the title Soul Equipper.   The Soul Equipper traveled from place to place harvesting the bodies of the recently deceased. He did not steal their complete souls. Instead, he extracted the lingering spiritual essence, memories, emotions, and mana left behind within their bodies after death.   He then forged those remnants into weapons known as Soul Equipment.   These weapons were capable of inflicting more than physical injury. Each one carried fragments of the dead person's memories, fears, pain, or final emotions. When the weapon struck someone, it forced those sensations upon the victim.   A blade forged from the essence of someone who had suffered from hundreds of needle wounds could make a single cut feel like a thousand needles piercing the body. A weapon made from someone terrified of spiders might cause its victim to feel insects crawling across their skin or even see swarms of spiders surrounding them.   Because of these effects, Soul Equipment was considered exceptionally cruel and dangerous.   The creation process was equally horrifying. By draining the spiritual essence left within a corpse, the Soul Equipper stripped away the final traces of the person's presence. The body became withered and spiritually hollow, as though even the memory of the deceased had been violated.
Damien's Protection
A wise sage named Damien eventually discovered the Soul Equipper's crimes. Using his knowledge of spiritual arts, Damien developed a ritual that protected the bodies of the dead from having their lingering essence extracted.   The ritual began by mixing salt with purified water. Damien would chant a blessing over the mixture before sprinkling it across the deceased. A small stone charm, usually around one inch in diameter, was then placed upon the body.   The charm carried a spiritual blessing that anchored the deceased person's remaining essence and prevented it from being removed or corrupted.   As more communities learned of the Soul Equipper, Damien's protective ritual spread. Families began performing it whenever someone died, denying the Soul Equipper the materials needed to create more weapons.   Eventually, Damien confronted the Soul Equipper directly.
Battle of Damien and the Soul Equipper
According to the legend, their battle was long and destructive.   The Soul Equipper wielded a katana forged from the essence of someone who had possessed a terrible fear of teleportation magic and being torn apart while traveling between locations. The weapon could cut through space itself. Each swing opened a dimensional tear that severed whatever existed along its path.   When the Soul Equipper struck, Damien blocked the attack with his spiritual aura. The dimensional slash failed to pierce his defenses, leaving no mark upon his body.   The two fought evenly for several minutes, with the Soul Equipper changing between different Soul Equipment weapons while Damien relied upon his spiritual arts and physical skill.   Eventually, the Soul Equipper launched a direct attack, expecting Damien to defend himself. At the same time, he secretly threw a knife toward one of Damien's companions. Damien moved to intercept it and suffered a shallow cut.   That single wound was all the weapon required.   The knife had been forged from the spiritual essence of someone consumed by depression, doubt, and regret. Its special ability forced the victim to repeatedly experience their greatest fears, failures, and insecurities for thirty seconds.   The Soul Equipper believed Damien would become paralyzed by grief and despair.   Instead, the attack failed.   Damien had already accepted his failures and made peace with the person he had become. He understood both his strengths and weaknesses, leaving the weapon with nothing it could use to break him.   Rather than weakening, Damien's soul burned brighter.   His spiritual aura surged through the knife and shattered it. He then closed the distance between them and struck the Soul Equipper with a powerful roundhouse kick, breaking his neck and ending the battle.

Funerary Tradition

Although the original Soul Equipper was killed, and time as turn this story in myth and histoert, people feared that someone else might one day rediscover his techniques.   Because of this, Damien's protective ritual was preserved and eventually adopted throughout the Twilight Kingdom.   When preparing a body for burial, attendants bless a mixture of salt and water before sprinkling it over the deceased. A small stone charm is then placed upon the body.   One side of the charm carries a blessing meant to protect the body and soul from spiritual violation. The other side bears a single word selected by the deceased person's family.   This word represents the quality they believe stood at the center of that person's life.   Common examples include:
  • Brave
  • Kind
  • Loving
  • Loyal
  • Wise
  • Strong
The word is intended to preserve the memory of who the person truly was, even after their soul has passed onward.   Over time, the ritual became more than a defense against Soul Equipment. It became a way for families to honor the dead, protect their remains, and declare what they believed was most precious about the life that had been lost.
