Mana Core

Mana Cores are unique biological organs found within monsters. As hard as crystal, they serve as the central reservoir and regulator of a monster’s magical energy. These cores are highly prized and widely harvested, as they are essential components in magical items, enchanted gear, advanced magitech, and large-scale infrastructure such as mana-powered constructs and cities.   Mana Cores come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and colors. Their appearance depends on both the monster’s innate power and its magical affinity.

Properties

Material Characteristics

Mana Cores typically form in either a spear-like or diamond-like shape, appearing as glowing crystalline structures. When first handled, a Mana Core feels rigid and cold, much like solid crystal. However, can compress slightly under sufficient pressure, pulsing faintly almost like a living heart. The cores with higher magical density it will take more pressure to compress it.   If observed before extraction, fine vein-like strands can be seen branching outward from the core. These veins connect the Mana Core to the monster’s internal chakra or mana network. Once removed from the body, these connections rapidly wither and fall away.   Inside the crystal shell, pure liquid mana can be seen slowly shifting and flowing. When compressed, the crystal reshapes rather than cracks, reforming itself as long as its internal mana remains intact.

Origin & Source

Mana Cores originate exclusively from creatures classified as monsters—beings that are stronger and more dangerous than ordinary animals due to their innate magical abilities. Monsters that resemble natural animals often possess enhanced physical traits such as increased strength, durability, speed, or regeneration when compared to their mundane counterparts.   The prevailing theory is that the Mana Core empowers and augments the monster’s body over time. While all living creatures possess some degree of mana, monsters develop a Mana Core early in life. This core grows naturally as the creature matures but can expand far more rapidly through combat, feeding on other mana core, and by absorbing the essence of defeated monsters.   Extremely powerful monsters are believed to have accumulated energy from countless battles, resulting in exceptionally large and potent Mana Cores.

Life & Expiration

If a Mana Core is not refined or used, it will gradually lose its stored magical energy. The rate of deterioration depends on its size and potency. A Mana Core roughly the size of a gold coin will typically lose all magical energy within one week.   The freshness of a Mana Core is easy to identify:
  • Liquid Mana Movement – Active, flowing mana indicates potency.
  • Aura Glow – A visible magical aura confirms remaining energy.
If both the liquid movement and aura vanish, the Mana Core is considered inert and useless for enchantment.

History & Usage

Everyday use

Mana Cores are vital to nearly every kingdom and civilization. Common applications include:
  • Enchanted weapons, armor, and accessories
  • Magitech devices and constructs
  • Mana-powered vehicles, such as boats and transports
  • Power systems that generate energy for towns and cities
  • Advanced magical tools and infrastructure
While modern magical devices may no longer require full Mana Cores, most contemporary magic technology evolved from early designs that relied directly on them—such as primitive light sources that were once powered by Mana Cores before being replaced by stabilized crystals and magic circles.

Refinement

There are two primary methods of refinement:
Immediate Use
A Mana Core may be used directly in crafting or enchantment. In this case, it becomes the core or power source of the item, device, or enchantment. Once embedded, the Mana Core stabilizes and lasts significantly longer, typically requiring only periodic recharging depending on the complexity and power demands of the item.
Long-Term Storage
For transport, trade, or delayed crafting, Mana Cores must be stabilized using a Containment Cube Ritual. The ritual requires:
  • A specialized cube etched with containment circles on four sides
  • Stability runes placed on the top and bottom faces
The caster must channel mana into the cube, carefully matching the output and frequency of the Mana Core. Multiple cores may be sealed at once, provided the caster can sustain the required energy flow. The ritual duration ranges from 10 minutes to over an hour, depending on the size and power of the cores involved.   A successful sealing is indicated by:
  • The complete disappearance of the external aura
  • The liquid mana remaining visible but motionless
In this state, the Mana Core no longer deteriorates. However, identifying its exact potency afterward becomes difficult. Only size remains as a rough indicator, so all identifying traits—color, glow, shape, and origin—should be documented beforehand.

Hazards

Improper refinement is dangerous.
  • Insufficient Mana Output: The Mana Core may drain the caster, rendering them unconscious for several days.
  • Large or Powerful Cores: Improper sealing can cause backlash, damaging the caster’s chakra network. Effects may include magical burns, damaged chakra points, or lingering physical side effects.
  • Excess or Rapid Mana Input: Overloading the ritual can shatter the Mana Core entirely, breaking it into inert shards as the liquid mana spills and dissipates.
