Hantoo Bird Species in Avendora | World Anvil

Hantoo Bird (H-on-too)

Basic Information

Anatomy

Contrary to their beautiful velvety appearance, Hantoo Birds are actually not only dangerous, but vicious as well. These bright and colorful birds have sharp beaks with small serrations, allowing them to tear away bits of flesh from their prey. The bright colors aren’t just to attract mates either, they also signify that they are extremely poisonous, their diet of poisonous fruit (which of course they are immune to the effects of) building up venom in a special organ. As if all that wasn’t enough, they nearly always stick together to form massive hunting swarms, swooping down on pray in a cloud, leaving only bones and tendons where their victim once stood.

Genetics and Reproduction

Hantoo birds lay an average of 5-8 small eggs every month, resulting in a massive local population on Sel’Aryn.

Ecology and Habitats

These birds both consume food from and nest in their namesake, the great Hantoo Trees of Sel’Aryn. The large poisonous fruits that grow from the trees act as food and their tangled limbs acting as perfect nesting spots for thousands of the birds to take refuge and sleep in. When an entire swarm is nested and sleeping, it almost makes the tree seem like it has brightly colored leaves instead of the green ones it actually has. Inhabitants of their local planet have learned to beware these brightly colored trees for that reason.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Hantoo birds are omnivores and consume both fruit and meat.

Additional Information

Uses, Products & Exploitation

The Ki’Yari Republic of Sel’Aryn harvests these birds in droves via large nets hung or launched from their tree buildings, using their poison for warfare and other military purposes and their meat as food.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

These birds rely mainly on their excellent vision and hearing, the vision to spot and hunt prey and their hearing to avoid being snuck up on when asleep in their trees.
