Basilikaari Species in Avendora | World Anvil

Basilikaari (B-ah-ss-ill-uh-car-ee)

Basic Information

Anatomy

These blue-skinned beings have exceedingly body temperature due to high liquid nitrogen content with blue blood so cold that their three hearts must pump constantly to keep enough blood flowing that it doesn't freeze. Becasue of this, a Basilikaari heart attacks cause the victim to become very stiff as the very blood within their veins is frozen solid. Due to their very high triple heart rate, Basilikaari can bleed out very quickly if a blood vessel is punctured. To prevent this from happening to often, many of their blood vessels run through bone enclosures on the outside of their bodies, or in places where articulation must still be retained, thick and flexabile cartilage connects the bony blood-filled tube. Fairly large pointed ears allow for a good sense of hearing, with noses that sense smell and breath as normal but mouthes that act only as comuncation organs, sustenance being consumed instead via organs on the upper side of their chests. Food is pressed into the pourus area where it is absorbed and taken into the digestive tract. Their lidless eyes never blink in their sockets fixed into their hairless heads with craniums slightly enlarged to make room for the special organ attached to their brain that allows every Basilikaari to draw power from the Void. This does not allow the race standard Void Wielding powers as currently understood, instead granting them the abilities of varrying levels of telekinesis and telepathy. The general rule is that a Basilikaari can lift anything with his mind that he could physcially with the same amount of energy expended, however some have a particular talent in this area and are capable of much greater feats. Telepathy wise, most Basilikaari can only comunicate non-verbally with willing memebers of their own race, but just as with telekinesis, some are far stronger than average and are capable of forcing their mind into others and even other races against their wills. To summarize, it is thought that while every Basilikaari would qualify as a being capable of Void Wielding, those that possess greater than average ability are similar in rarity and treatment as a Void Wielder would be in the other nations of Avendora.

Genetics and Reproduction

Basilikaari are genderless, every individual possessing the capability to produce both eggs and sperm. Their reproduction system is quite interesting and disturbing to many. Every biological cycle for this race (which is about 1.8 months) every being produces 1 egg which is excreted from their mouth (at least what appears as a mouth but acrually servers primarily as their vocal organ). This egg can then be pressed into the actual mouth organ of another being, where it is detected by the other body as an egg and is then fertilized. A Badilikaari cannot fertilize their own egg as their bodies will not detect the identical DNA and will just consume the egg as food. After fertilized, the egg will split into two and begin to grow inside the host. After 5-6 years the 2 new Basilikaari are ready to be born, and the split the host open from the inside, killing them. This loss of life has been remedied with modern technology, and now nearly 100 percent of Basilikaari born are grown in artificial wombs from eggs that are donated by every Badilikaari upon production by mandate every biological cycle. The fertilization and growing organs are harvested from deceased Basilikaari ideally or grown artificially through cloning technology, although the failure rate for the latter method is somewhat higher.

Ecology and Habitats

Basilikaari live in extremely cold environments, often times well below zero. Their blood possess a special chemical that prevents it from freezing solid. Becasue their body temperatures run very low, many various sicknesses and viruses are frozen and become too slow to effect them, granting immunity. However, viruses that can survive in  cold environments (of which there are many in Avendora) thrive in their bodies as there is not even remotely close to enough heat contained within to kill them. Because of this, Basilikaari must be very careful when making contact with the various races of Avendora.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Basilikaari mouthes are located in the top of their chests and food is pressed into these surfaces which then absorb the sustenance and bring it into their digestive tracts. Eating is considered a very private thing and is only done alone. Diet wise, these beings eat mostly meat, a large portion of which are fish and small shrimp-like creatures that can be mixed with water and poured into their mouths and quickly digested. They have found the Nisaals of Avendora quite apatizing due to the similarity to their own food. This is especially convienent for soldiers in the field who need to eat quickly and in private. As Bailikaari do not have tastebuds, it does not matter much to them what they consume. They must, however, be careful not to drink liquids that could be frozen by their extrmely low body temperatures and cause a blockage.
