Typical Clinic

Written by mrmastermattler

The typical medical treatment in my setting would be comprised of mostly herbal remedies with the availability of more potent alchemical treatments for those with wealth or particularly nasty illnesses. Magical healing does exist, but with the scarcity of practitioners with real power, it is often the last resort. This is because finding a cleric or paladin with the power to magically cure is hard and the donation to the church is large.

The actual characteristics of the average clinic are as follows: Expect to find a small, clean, and well-lit building. Typically there will be 1 to 2 medical practitioners attending to people. They used sturdy tables covered in a cloth sheet to examine patients on. Medical knowledge is rather advanced for the setting, and most injuries and diseases can be cured by professionals.

The whole place will have a bit of a vinegar smell from the work of disinfecting implements. The buildings often will have few windows to keep privacy and pathogens out. Lighting will typically be oil lanterns, while wealthier clinics will have magical ever-burning torches. While books are very expensive, a few general anatomy or biology tomes are scattered around.

The red spider lily (see sidebar) is often planted around clinics. It is thought to ward off decay and disease. Its association with clinics lead to the red spider lily being thought of as a death flower. Nevertheless, the blooming flowers can be a beautiful, serene scene for those entering.

Large cities will normally have many options for healing, often featuring 1 or 2 clinics, a more technical hospital, and a clerical healing option.

The practitioners inside the facility will run the gamut from typical pretty nurse to old kind grandmother to weird witch doctor. Despite appearances, any practitioner of medicine is well-loved and respected in their community. This contributes to the clean and well-kept nature of the clinics, as the community knows that sickness and injury are inevitable and the doctor can bring them back from the brink.

As a respected building, the clinic is often in a more prominent place in towns. They are easily recognizable with the symbol of Hermes prominently displayed near the enterance.

Entries

The entrances of the building are front and back doors. The building is split into two rooms, a front area for seeing patients and a back area for preparing chemicals, herbs, and cleaning utensils. The back door is to the back room and generally, patients are not allowed inside. The front door is in the front room. The two rooms are connected by a swinging door. The front and back rooms both have a few small windows high in the walls used for ventilation. They are very short but wide, positioned near the ceiling.

Denizens

Commonly this building is occupied by practitioners, townsfolk, and sometimes by the resident cat. The cat is black and well-trained, keeping the clinic free of vermin while staying out of the way of the people.

Valuables

The alchemical materials here are valuables in their own right, but clinics often have a few coins from gifts from locals or as perperation to buy supplies

Tourism

Hospitals typically do not inspire tourism
