Personal history
Howard grew up poor and was taken in by a local gang in his early teen years, where he committed petty crimes to impress his peers, eventually rising up to drug dealing. A near-miss with law enforcement caused him to rethink his life in his early twenties. However, attempting to separate from his gang would result in him being hunted down, assuming he wasn't killed as soon as he attempted to.
Benson fled to New Hampton by hitch-hiking and enrolled in the local police academy. He showed exceptional talent, graduated with flying colours and rose to the rank of detective within the New Hampton police force.
His career was almost halted, however, when he lashed out at a serial killer he had apprehended. The killer's refusal to talk, and his condescending demeanor caused Benson to inflict near-fatal wounds to the man, almost costing them the case.
The force had suspended Howard for three months without pay. Given his glistening service record, the under-resourcing of the NHPD and the horrendous crimes committed by the serial killer, he was returned to his post as a detective. His peers were conflicted, some praising him, stating that the killer deserved the beating while others feel as if he went way beyond the line and should be prosecuted.
Howard eventually left the NHPD to start L.A.S.E.R, feeling as though it was time for him to move on. With his connections from his career he was able to establish a foothold for the organization and secure lucrative contracts which allowed L.A.S.E.R to grow.
