Wisp Species in Aurora | World Anvil

Wisp

Wisps are small, white ghostly creatures with round bodies and feathery fins on their tails. They have black eyes which they rarely open, preferring to sense things through their bodies. They are found in the moors outside Citadel.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Wisps do not have limbs, only a long tail.

Ecology and Habitats

Wisps prefer to live in forested areas. They sleep in the trees and come down during the day. They move by floating through the air and travel in swarms.

Dietary Needs and Habits

They eat leaves, moss and rotting wood on the forest floor.

Behaviour

Wisps have a habit of enticing animals and lulling them to sleep so they can steal from them. They do this by first having a single wisp float in front of an animal. The wisp makes itself glow and move around to catch the animal's attention, then flies away to get the animal to follow it. Once it's gotten it in a secluded corner, the wisp will begin to "sing" by emitting a frequency at its target, which is perceived as sweet, soothing music. This frequency causes the animal to be lulled into a deep sleep.   Once it's asleep, the swarm comes in. The wisps bite away at the horns, fur, hooves and anything shiny or fragrant on the animal. A separate swarm will often go find the animal's home or stores and ransack those too. Then when they're done they float back to their tree, carrying the spoils in their mouths. They then use what they've stolen to decorate their home, singing together as they do.   This trait was discovered the hard way by Councillor Kindred when he came across one of these wisps, only to wake up after a deep sleep and find that his entire bag with all his supplies inside had been stolen. It took him half a day to track down the swarm, and even longer to retrieve his possessions.

these are scarier than the traditional will'o'the'wisp legends and folklore that I've heard of before!
