Basic Information

Anatomy

Dwarves are humanoids standing between 4 and 5 feet in height and almost as broad shouldered as they are tall. Their hands have 4 fingers and an opposable thumb, while their feet each have seven toes.

Genetics and Reproduction

Dwarves reproduce sexually with pregnancy in females lasting about 11 months.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Dwarves are omnivores with a preference for red meats and mushrooms.

Biological Cycle

Dwarven children are much like adult adult dwarves just minus the facial hair. They remain children from approximately 50 years at which point they become adolescents. This stage lasts about 25 years and by age 75 dwarves are usually considered young adults, and by age 100 they are completely entered into dwarven society as full adults. Old age is concidered to set in at about age 300.

Social Structure

Clans made up of several loosely related or allied families, each ruled jointly by the eldest patriarch and matriarch who then vote for the king or thrain of a region.

Facial characteristics

Dwarves have prominent foreheads and large noses; strong, square jaws; and most have long beards that they take great pride in.

Average Intelligence

Comparable with humans. Dwarves tend to be good at puzzle solving and military tactics and other forms of logical thinking that take advantage of their spatial awareness skills and tendency to not get confused or turned around.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

All dwarves have a natural sense of where magnetic north is, as well as a spatial awareness that makes it difficult for them to get lost while underground. Other senses are comparable to a human's unless otherwise noted.

Civilization and Culture

Naming Traditions

Dwarves favor shorter given names that may sound as if they have a Germanic root or origin. Surnames are frequently are combinations of two words two words that indicate what a family is noted for, with dwarves who achieve notoriety adding prestige to their family's name or maybe founding a new one.

Beauty Ideals

Dwarves of all genders appreciate physical strength and stamina, scars that do not interfere with performance, and well groomed beards. Any dwarf unable to grow a full beard is expected to to fulfill this standard by being clean shaven with the obvious time and effort invested in that.

History

At the end of the War of Beginnings, all histories and records from the Time of Tumults was lost except those that were salvaged by Corlan En-Dal himself, and he keeps his personal library within his divine realm; but the dwarves emerged as a strong race, ready to take on their new world.
During the rise of Kahren Derosa and her Fatalists most dwarves sided with her, viewing her goals as imminently practical. As the War of Destinies escalated, however, more and more of them began to feel that the war was an unwanted and unreasonable drain on dwarven lives and resources by and for other races with little to be gained by the dwarves themselves. Eventually these tensions broke in a massive schism with about half of all the dwarven peoples withdrawing from the conflict all together. These dwarves, who came to be known as the Kordelvar withdrew deep into the tallest and darkest of their mountain ranges and went deep underground into almost complete seclusion, refusing to trade or interact with any other people except other dwarves.
After the War of Destinies, those dwarves remaining in the upper ranges of mountains and in contact with other races came to be known as the Fendelvar who prospered and spread out until they began to occupy the non-mountainous foothills around their home ranges. As these dwarves adapted to life mostly above ground and more pastoral farming lives they began to diverge as a separate culture as well. By the time of the Upstart's Rebellion these dwarves had begun calling themselves the Thraindurrin and lived in shallow barrow halls carved into hills with strong watchtowers at the top. They focused more on farming, forestry, and stone masonry rather than mining and smithing. Additionally, they found themselves on opposite sides of the conflict from the Fendelvar. By the time the Great ReOrdering was completed the three divisions of the dwarves was completed.
