Valusian Cluster
The Valusian Cluster
Outer Systems Colonial Region
Overview
The Valusian Cluster is one of the most unusual Human settlements ever established beyond the early colonial wave. The cluster, located in the outer orbit of 9t-Gretflosh, a massive pre-main-sequence blue star inside a luminous reflection nebula, comprises several rocky proto-planets embedded in a dense disk of dust, gas, and debris. Scientists believe this disk comprises the remnants of destroyed moons or early planetary bodies.
The six largest proto-planets host enormous subterranean cities carved deep beneath radiation-scoured surfaces. Surface radiation levels are so intense that permanent habitation above ground is impossible without hardened suits and shielded vehicles.
Colonists settled the cluster in 2350 CE during the second expansion wave following Mars’ stabilization period. The colonies developed into isolated but technologically advanced research hubs, famous across human space for their expertise in genetic engineering.
They are also infamous for darker reasons.
Founding and Circumstances
The Valusian Cluster was originally settled by a coalition of European genetic research institutes and biotech firms seeking a remote environment free from Mars’ increasingly restrictive ethical oversight.
The region offered several advantages:
extreme isolation from major trade routes
abundant mineral resources in proto-planet crusts
stable subterranean environments
easy access to icy asteroids orbiting a nearby gas giant
The founding expedition comprised five generation-capable colonial vessels carrying scientists, engineers, technicians, and support personnel largely drawn from French and German scientific communities.
They established their first and largest colony: Colonie Éternité.
From there the other colonies followed.
The Six Major Colonies
Colonie Éternité
Diameter: 2,112 km
The capital and administrative center of the cluster. Éternité houses the majority of government offices, research universities, and genetic institutes.
Its subterranean city stretches nearly thirty kilometers beneath the crust in concentric cylindrical caverns linked by high-speed rail tubes and gravity elevators.
Colonie Luminosité
Diameter: 1,481 km
A major hydroponic and aquatic agricultural center supplying food to the rest of the cluster. Luminosité also houses several large crystalline geode cave systems now converted into tourism destinations.
Colonie Spectrum
Diameter: 1,279 km
Primary industrial hub producing advanced biotech equipment, nanomedical hardware, and research instruments.
Colonie Révélation
Diameter: 1,143 km
Home to several controversial private genetics laboratories and think tanks.
Révélation has a reputation for “pushing boundaries.”
Colonie Curiosité
Diameter: 1,010 km
Exploration and geological survey colony specializing in proto-planetary science and nebular astrophysics.
Colonie Mérite
Diameter: 970 km
Military and security center responsible for protecting cluster shipping lanes and asteroid mining operations.
Valusian Identity
Residents of the cluster refer to themselves by colony origin rather than ethnic designation.
Examples:
Éternité
Luminosité
Spectrum
Révélation
Curiosité
Mérite
The surname convention reflects this identity.
Someone named Maggie Luminosité or Margarete Éternité-Bachmann signals both colony heritage and family lineage.
Outsiders often refer to them collectively as “Vals,” a shortened and often derogatory term.
The more offensive slur “Val genie” originated from rumors and later confirmed revelations about genetic engineering experiments conducted during the early decades of the colonies.
The Val Genies
In the first century of settlement, several research institutes engaged in illegal human genetic modification programs.
Among the most controversial were engineered humans designed to possess extremely high libido and aesthetic features optimized for pleasure industries.
These individuals became known as Val genies.
While originally created as controlled companions and luxury service workers, the program was eventually outlawed and dismantled after major political scandal.
However, by that time several generations already existed.

History
Notable Historic Events
The First Descent (2350 CE)
Initial colonists established Éternité beneath a natural basalt dome discovered via orbital radar.
The Nebular Shield Break (2389 CE)
A radiation flare from the young blue star damaged several surface shield stations, forcing the first generation of full subterranean city expansions.
The Genomic Trials (2417 CE)
A series of investigations exposed illegal genetic engineering programs. The scandal shook the cluster and led to strict internal oversight councils.
The Ice Pact (2472 CE)
Mining rights for the nearby gas giant’s asteroid belt were formalized, guaranteeing water supplies for centuries.
The Silent Correction (2528 CE)
Several rogue laboratories in Révélation were quietly shut down by coalition security forces after performing banned genome editing.
Notable Historic Persons

Governance
The Valusian Cluster is governed by the Conseil des Colonies Valusiennes.
Each colony sends representatives to the council.
On paper the cluster is a cooperative scientific republic.
In reality, power is shared between major biotech corporations and the genetic research institutes that funded the original settlement.
