Dragon

Dragons are one of the two main sapient species on Aufyra, the other being humans.   Dragons are mortal and their flesh will decay like any other living thing, but their bones and keratin appear unaffected by the passage of time. These materials will not erode or deteriorate, and if not cremated by their brethren will exist indefinitely. The only exceptions are naturally shed scales, teeth, & claws (referred to collectively as dragonshed), which lose much of their resilience after leaving the body.   Due to their reptilian bodies and otherworldly traits, dragons consider themselves the most cherished children of the gods.   Dragon historians record all of Aufyran history by carving it into godlivine slates.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Dragons are large, winged, quadrupedal reptiles that breathe fire.

Growth Rate & Stages

Hatchlings shed rapidly through their childhood and reach adolescence at about 20 years. Until then, their bodies are more fragile, as they haven't grown out of their "hatchling teeth" or developed the legendary hardness of their older counterparts.   Dragons become fully mature adults at age 40.

Naming Traditions

A standard family name features the mother's first name with "clutch" as a suffix, followed by the individual's hatchingplace. In place of a biological mother, another caretaker's name is sometimes used.   An example, represented in Common: Alyss Sonora-Clutch of Southanchor Whirlpool Islands   Family names are said to have once reached all the way back to their god-born progenitors, but this tradition resulted in names that were very, very long. Most dragons these days are aware of at least three generations back and typically just present their immediate parent and home.

Major Organizations

While not all dragons consider themselves part of Draconia, nearly all Draconians are dragons.

Common Dress Code

Excluding hatchlings, it's considered rude and irresponsible if a dragon doesn't apply a protective covering to their claws. It's not to protect themselves, but the world around them; without a barrier, a dragon will easily wear down even the ground they step on. Protective accessories like nail polish or gloves are created from dragonshed.

Common Customs, Traditions and Rituals

Dragon communities uphold recycling practices, including the gathering of dragonshed. These materials are used to create decorative clothing & gloves, or are ground into powder & combined with paint to make colorful nail polish for claws.   When a dragon dies, it is customary for their body to be returned to the place of their hatching and cremated by dragon flame.   If a dragon loses a horn, tooth or otherwise in an accident or injury, they will retrieve the broken piece and destroy it with their own flame. They believe a part of their soul will remain trapped within the fragment, otherwise.

Common Taboos

Humans have been tempted time and time again to claim dragon bone & scale for their own use. Some want to create indestructible armor, while others want to fashion their own weapons or tools for harvesting godlivine.   There is no greater insult. Dragons will aggressively reclaim the remains of their people, and usually those who abuse the dead are condemned to death. Dragon bodies must return to ash in their entirety.   While not as grave of a transgression, the use of dragonshed by any other species is considered offensive.
