The Arbiters

The Arbiters are highly respected peacekeepers, knights, and scholars throughout the Atraelian Empire. They are exclusively trained at Traylam Academy, but members of their order can be found anywhere from the smallest hamlets to the greatest cities of the empire. They act as many things, depending sometimes on their specialization but also according to the task at hand. For example, an Arbiter's specialty might be diplomacy, but he is also trained in combat and medicine. He also knows enough about magic to more easily recognize its effects, and perhaps utilize artifacts otherwise mysterious to laymen.   The order was founded centuries ago by a group of wise and experienced knights who had grown tired of the constant wars and conflicts that plagued their world. They sought to establish a new order of knights who would be dedicated to resolving conflicts and promoting peace, no matter the cost.   To become an Arbiter, one must first demonstrate exceptional skill in combat and diplomacy. Prospective members must pass a rigorous series of tests designed to test their abilities in these areas. Once accepted, an Arbiter is sworn to uphold the order's principles of justice and peace.   The Arbiters are known for their distinctive cloaks, which bear a clasp depicting a golden hawk. Depending on the Arbiter's rank, the hawk may have its wings folded or fully outstretched. Some Arbiters have this emblem on a weapon or piece of armor, or perhaps as a tattoo in some cases.   The order is led by a Grand Arbiter, who is elected from among the members of the order. The Grand Arbiter is responsible for overseeing the activities of the order and for ensuring that its members adhere to the order's principles.   Typically, most Arbiters are found mediating disputes or handling violent situatios outiside the capabilities of the locals. They are also often called upon to handle various crimes and investigations. They are not typically paid for their work, as Arbiters amongst the common folk help the needy out of a sense of honor and duty. However, an Arbiter is free to join organizations like the Adventurer's Guild and other similar organizations if they wish to make some profit whilst peacekeeping in the empire.   Some Arbiters are more combat focused, serving as commando units or even frontline troops where needed to ensure peace. But all Arbiters are deadly when faced in combat. By virtue of their trials to enter the order, all Arbiters are combat hardened before ever taking their oaths. In addition, Kael acts as their patron deity, a good indication of their devotion to justice.

The Oath of the Arbiter:

"I, [Apprentice's Name], do solemnly swear to uphold the peace of the Atraelian Empire at any cost. I pledge to stand as a vigilant guardian, defending the innocent and ensuring justice is served without hesitation or bias.   In the face of darkness and uncertainty, I shall wield my blade and harness my powers to protect those who cannot defend themselves. I shall be a beacon of hope in times of despair, bringing light to the shadows that threaten our people.   I vow to serve as a steadfast pillar of strength, standing united with my fellow Arbiters, bound by a sense of camaraderie that transcends borders and titles. Together, we are a force to be reckoned with, a united front against the tides of chaos.   Though we are sworn to the Atraelian Empire, our purpose lies not in servitude to a crown, but rather in the service of its people. We are the watchers in the shadows, the guardians of peace, and the defenders of liberty. We serve as the voice of the voiceless, seeking to bring balance and harmony to all corners of this land.   As an Arbiter, I accept the responsibility of placing the welfare of the innocent above my own, and I am ready to sacrifice for the greater good. I shall remain steadfast and true to the values of justice, compassion, and honor.   May my actions be guided by wisdom, tempered with empathy, and steered by the pursuit of righteousness. I take this oath willingly, knowing that the burden of my duty shall be great, but with the knowledge that I walk this path not alone, but alongside my fellow Arbiters, forever bound in brotherhood and comradery.   With this oath, I pledge my life and my purpose to the Order of the Arbiters, for the betterment of Atraeleon and its people, now and for all the days to come. So, I swear, and so shall it be."

Honor. Stability.
